  1. SIFT This is an acronym to help you read understand and analyze the text more completely!

  2. SYMBOL • A symbol is a person, place object or activity that stands for something beyond itself. When you interpret symbols in a literary work, you look beyond the work’s literal meaning to gain a deeper understanding. • Example- What does the American Flag symbolize?

  3. IMAGERY • Identify all images and sensory details in the text. • Sensory Details • FEEL • TOUCH • TASTE • SMELL • SOUND

  4. Figures of Speech • This is your figurative language and other devices. • Simile • Metaphor • Allusions • Alliteration • Tone • Diction (word choice) • Etc…

  5. TONE & THEME • A close examination of words used, imagery, and detail reveal the narrator’s attitude or tone and contributes to the reader’s understanding of the text. • To determine theme: • Summarize the story • List subjects that emerge from your summary, such as evil, poverty, injustice, et… • Write a sentence about each subject and insights gained from symbolism, imagery and other devices. • ALL DEVICES LEAD TO TONE AND THEME.
