Facts • •The park is a commonwealth reserve • •The park is jointly managed by its Aboriginal traditional owners and the Northern Territory government • •The name Kakadu is the result of the European interpretation of a local Aboriginal floodplain language, called Gagudju. (The name Gagudju is also used for the tribe that speaks the language) • •Kakadu is one of the few World Heritage Areas that are listed for both their natural and cultural heritage

  3. Brief background • There are over 10,000 different species if insects, 280 species of birds, 117 species of reptiles, 60 species of mammals. Some animal species in this national park are endangered or endemic meaning there is no other place in the world you could find them. Kakadu is considered one of the few national parks weed free of the world. •Kakadu is one of the precious few places in Australia where there have been only very limited if any extinctions of plant or animal species

  4. climate • Kakadu national park has a tropical monsoon climate with two seasons: the dry season and the wet season. The dry season is from April to May until September, the wet season obviously from October until April to May. It rains a lot more between January and March. The rain often leads to flooding and closure of parts of the park. Between October and December there are heavy thunderstorms. Between mid June and mid August you get to experience the most pleasant day temperatures (averages around 30°C). Night temperatures during this time can drop below 10°C.

  5. Fauna and flora • The plant and animal life in Kakadu is what attracts tourists the most because it is very appealing and interesting. The wild life in Kakadu is the liveliest during rainy seasons. A quarter of all Australian freshwater fish species, and over one third of Australian bird species can be found in Kakadu.   6. Feral animals management • Feral animals in Kakadu were introduced by non-Aboriginal people. The animals were once either domesticated or native to another country and now live and breed in the park. Among the feral animals in Kakadu are Asian water buffalo, cattle, pigs, horses, donkeys, cats, dogs, rats, mice, house geckos and European bees.
