Nucleic Acids

  • Function/job: Store important Information in the cell

  • Made of: nucleotides

  • Examples: DNA and RNA


Nucleic Acid Structure

  • A nucleotide is made of 3 components:

    • Phosphate

    • sugar

    • nitrogen base

  • Contains information needed for cell activity and cell division

  • Contains all genetic information

  • DNA – Deoxyribonucleic Acid

  • Structure, It contains

    • Sugar Phosphate Backbone (deoxyribose)

    • Nitrogen containing bases (four possible)

    • Double Stranded

  • Double Helix, with base pairing in the center.

  • Four Possible Nitrogen Ring bases

    • ADENINE – A

    • GUANINE– G

    • CYTOSINE – C

    • THYMINE – T

      Know that:

      A goes with T

      G goes with C


The bases are in the inside of the ladder structure they are like the rungs of the ladder.

The order of base pairs gives organisms their unique traits
