  1. Database replication as it relates to data analysis • Heinz Stockinger is looking at the problem of data replication over wide area networks • Working actively right now with Youhei Morita in the context of Monarc. • He is also collaborating with the ORCA effort to replicate data over different federations. • He will present at RD45 this week on Friday.

  2. Integration of Databases • Frank van Lingen is looking at the problem of how to tie together different but related databases. • This involves the glue necessary to bring them together and the idea of views to extract the relevant data for a given application. • He collaborates with the Geant4 people and Cristal.

  3. The Wisdom project • The Wisdom project was originally put together to pursue two technical aims and to give the framework for the collaboration with Pakistan. The two technical aims are to exploit the use of XML and to get familiar with the simulation work. • We can now turn a database into XML without knowing the schema. The main driving force for this is for Cristal but it has wider applications which will be explored by Heinz and Frank. • CMSIM now runs and we can use the relatively small computing centre in Pakistan to generate simulated events. • The next step will be to implement ORCA and also have that running in Pakistan.

  4. Browsing and XML • The Helsinki Institute of Physics (Tuovi) project looks at the issue of displaying and browsing Objectivity databases via XML. • The main issue generated here so far is the request for a query facility (OQL) which Objectivity presently lacks. • Hence the idea behind the Goblin project.

  5. The Goblin project • The Goblin project which is in the planning stage will take the present 'specific to Cristal' OQL and turn it into a general tool using the Active Schema now used in the Wisdom project. • This will also be important when generating viewpoints for Frank van Lingen's work.

  6. EU GRID • Both Heinz's and Frank's projects are relevant to the 'GRID' style projects and the experience generated in the other projects may become important when building these tools. • Both Heinz and Frank are attending the 'EU GRID' meetings at CERN which are in a preliminary stage.
