  2. Remediation Those that didn’t master the test will go with Ms. Strawn to another room. Those that did master the test stay in this room with Mr. Pinard.

  3. Writing Activity • Respond to this prompt – Why is music important to history? What are some events that have inspired music today? What are some events that should inspire music? • We’ll discuss it when everyone is done.

  4. Vocabulary Activity • Draw a picture of these four vocabulary words: • Missouri Compromise • Compromise of 1850 • Kansas-Nebraska Act • Popular Sovereignty

  5. The Missouri Compromise • Missouri wanted to join the Union. • This would upset the balance between slave and free states in Congress. • Missouri Compromise reached • Missouri came in as slave and Maine came in as free. • Banned slavery in the northern part of the Louisiana Territory.

  6. The 1850 Compromise • California applied for statehood as a free state. • Would upset the balance of free and slave states in the congress. • Agreed on the “1850 Compromise”

  7. 1850 Compromise cont. • California admitted as a free state. • Organized UT, TX, and NM into territories with the people choosing whether slave or free. • Created the Fugitive Slave Act. • Abolished slave trade in Washington D.C.

  8. Kansas-Nebraska Act • Douglas wants to organize Kansas and Nebraska territories. • Under Missouri Comp., they should be free. • Douglas proposed Kansas and Nebraska choose for themselves. • Repealed the Missouri Compromise.

  9. Popular Sovereignty • The people should decide for themselves. • In this case, the people of the territories should decide whether they are free or slave.

  11. Directions for Activity • Divide into groups of 6. • Half of the class will read about the North, and half will read about the South. • While you are reading, fill in the organizer given to you. • Once everyone is done, as a group, create a concept map on the butcher paper given you.
