HOW TO USE QUALITY REGISTRY DATA FOR QUALITY IMPROVEMENT

Learn how to use performance statistics and quality registry data to drive quality improvements in your unit. Understand the confounders that can affect performance calculations and dig deeper to identify factors that explain differences between units. Don't be too excited or anxious about differences in results, as they may not necessarily indicate quality differences.

  2. SUMMARY 1 • Show interest in the performance statistics of your unit. Data per se do not create quality improvements, but your actions may make a difference. • Aretheresignalssuggestingreasons for actions? • However, ifthereportclaimsthatyourperformancestatisticsaregood/poor, don’tgettooexcited/anxious – differences in resultsdonotnecessarilymeanqualitydifferences.

  3. SUMMARY 2 • Familiariseyourselfwiththe main confoundersaffectingtheperformancecalculations, e.g. factorsthatmayaffectthecalculation of thestandardisedmortalityratio (SMR): • Poorfit of therisk-adjustmentmodel • Factorsaffectingthemeasurement of severity of illness • Themeasurement of mortality – biascausedbydifferences in hospitaldischargepractices • Randomvariation • Yule-Simpson’sparadox

  4. SUMMARY 3 • Digdeeper: try to findthefactorsthatexplaindifferencesbetweenunits • What is it thatyourcomparator is doingbetter? Is theresomethingthatyoucouldlearn, perhapssomegoodpracticesthatyoumight copy? • Sometimes, the data maytellyouthatyouaredoingwell.
