  5. Workforce Public Works Department • 24 Hour Operations • Day shift and the Night shift • Day shift = 8 Employees + 1 Supervisor + 1 Mechanic • 6:00am to 6:00pm • Night Shift = 8 Employees + 1 Supervisor + 1 Mechanic • 6:00pm to 6:00am

  6. Public Works Department Operations • During normal working hours… • Interpret weather radar and utilize weather service forecast to determine potential for upcoming winter weather events. Determine if 24 hour operations will be needed. • After normal business hours… • If weather conditions change unexpectedly the Police Department may contact a supervisor regarding street conditions.  The on call supervisor then assesses street conditions to determine the level or response necessary. • Emergency Snow Ordinance • Public Works would contact the Mayor or designee and declare appropriate actions. Public Works will also inform EOC Commander (Frank Stranimier) of any declarations.

Public Works Department Operations • Priority give to Police, Fire, and EMS • During snow/ice conditions, calls from the Police, Fire and EMS Departments regarding accidents, medical or other emergency situations are given top priority.  Upon request of the appropriate agency, the Street Maintenance Division will provide assistance as necessary.   • Street network clearing • The street network will be cleared in accordance with priorities established on snow operations maps for each section. • Progress will be monitored with passive GPS information. • Once snowfall has stopped… • Operations continue to perform post-storm clearing.  The goal of the Street Maintenance Division is to achieve bare pavement conditions on all streets within 36 hours after a storm event ends.

Public Works Department Challenges • Traffic • Stuck Vehicles • Parked Cars • Not only are the vehicles packing the snow, they are always trying to get around the dreaded “snow plow truck”. • Road Condition • Hills • Stopping Distances • Tree Limbs • Winter weather events are difficult for everyone, but try it with a 10’ snow plow and a 5 yard spreader loaded with 5-6 tons of salt. This gives a whole new meaning to the word “challenge”. • Breakdowns • Snow plow operations are the hardest thing you can put any truck through

Driveway 24 ft. 24 ft. • Helpful hints when shoveling your driveway (this will help reduce the amount of snow pushed back into your drive)… • Always shovel your drive to the right side. • Don’t just shovel to the curb. Clear an area 2’ past the end of your driveway. Watch For Traffic!!! • Shovel an area 2’ X 24’ up the street from your drive. Watch For Traffic!!! Driveway

Public Works Department Communication • During a winter weather event, staff will send e-mail notifications updating city hall and the police department of our progress. • To report a slick street: • During normal hours, contact Public Works Office at 737-6012. • After normal hours, phone the hotline at 737-6064.
