  2. How can you track where the atoms are going? • Create an Atom inventory Before and after a reaction occurs • Ex: Mn(s) + O2(g) > MnO Atom Inventory Before After Mn 1 Mn 1 O 2 O 1

If the atoms are not equal you must change the amount of the reactants and product • The coefficient shows the number of each atom should be multiplyed by the the number in front • Ex: 2 Mn(s) + O2 > 2MnO • Do an atom inventory afterwards • Mn 2 Mn 2 • O 2 O 2 • This shows that 2 atoms of Mn + 2 atoms of O will create 2 atoms of Mn and 2 atoms O • It also shows that 2 atoms of Mn and 1 molecule of O2 • Creates 2 Formula Units of MnO
