  1. Children and Inappropriate Content Presented by Mehmet Uygun, Ekrem Soyşen

  2. What is inappropriate content ? What are the responsibilities of parent ? What are the risks the children are exposed to ? How to protect children from inappropriate content ? Children and Inappropriate Content

  3. The Internet is a powerful learning tool. It provides a world of information that is instantly available 24/7. However, the wide-ranging and anonymous nature of the Internet brings with it risks—from explicit or inappropriate content to predators lurking in chat rooms and using instant messaging services.  All content on the internet which affect children in a bad way is the inappropriate content. What is inappropriate content ?

  4. To know where, how, and when childeren are accessing to the internet. To know what children are doing online. To get to know the technologies children are using. To make sure children know not to share personal information or photos. To protect childeren against inappropriate content. What are the responsibilities of parent ?

  5. To know where, how, and when childeren are accessing to the internet Know where children may have access to the Internet—at school, friends’ houses, community centers, or libraries—and where the computers may not have blocking and filtering mechanisms.

  6. Parent should make sure their children know how to stay safe and ecourage them to tell if they come across anything suspicious or if anybody say or does something that makes them feel uncomfortable or threatened. To know what children are doing online.

  7. This will help parent understand the risk, to be able to take safety precautions, and to be able to talk to them about what they are doing online. To get to know the technologies children are using

  8. To make sure children know not to share personal information or photos. This includes their full name, mailing address, telephone number, the name of their school, or any information that could allow someone to work out who they are and where they live.

  9. To protect childeren against inappropriate content. This includes all the steps in the previously described. And, making sure childeren are using technology safely by preventing children to access inappropriate content.

  10. age inappropriate content. violent content. illegal content such ad racism, child pornography. incorrect content incitement to harm infringement of human rights/defamation inappropriate advertisement and marketing to children data persistence data portability What are the risks the children are exposed to ?

  11. Age inappropriate content. Not all content should be accessible for children and youth. The material that is not illegal in general might harm the minds of the younger users such as adult pornography, when exposed to it unintentionally. The risks can result from the user's own conduct when searching for it purposely or stumbling across it without his/her intention. High percentage of children and young adults have access to the internet at their fingertips and might access age inappropriate content when being on their own and not having an adult for guidance at their side.

  12. This is another kind of age inappropriate content. Its effect depends largely on the age of the viewer, his/her habits of consuming Internet content and the social environment. Young children should be protected from stumbling across violent content. Violent content

  13. This type of content depends on current national laws and some types of content are generally outlawed in most countries Nevertheless, illegal content is available and can be accessed unintentionally but also deliberately by younger users Attention should be paid to children as victims of illegal content, e.g. by taking and publishing child abuse pictures or videos Illegal content such ad racism, child pornography.

  14. The increasing number of Web 2.0 applications where the correctness is at the most controlled by the users themselves not by an editor, made it possible for users to advertise fake products or making incorrect content within the site Biased content is also designed to transmit a certain message which might be taken for true by inexperienced young users. Incorrect content

  15. Many websites are poisoning the young minds and incite them to harm themselves Examples are websites that promote suicide, sectarianism, or anorexia. The risk of being exposed to content inciting harm is growing, and children and youth in particular are not able to make a real assessment of the risks arising from following the instructions given in such websites. Incitement to harm

  16. Because of the anonymity of the web, propaganda against certain groups or individuals can be made and can easily be made widespread • The risk of infringement on human rights and being a victim of defamation is much more likely to happen online than in reality • The defamatory content is harmful to young people whose opinion might be influenced by misleading information. Infringement of human rights/defamation

  17. This refers to the risks of receiving or being exposed to advertisement of products and services that are inappropriate for children, like cosmetic surgery Young users who give away private information, i.e. name, age or gender are likely to be asked to participate in lotteries These children in many cases are not aware of the consequences in giving their personal information. Inappropriateadvertisement and marketing to children

  18. Once published, the content can easily spread around the world and it's impossible to delete the information totally later on The young are not aware of the short- and long-term consequences and often publish texts and pictures they do not want to be publicly available later The risk of data persistence is pertinent to incautious younger people. Data persistence

  19. Data that are stored on a server or any platform can be transmitted to many other servers People may not be aware that they lose easily their privacy. Even younger people who know a lot about technical possibilities of the web, most of them do not have the ability to roughly estimate the consequences when their private data are mingled with other data about their own person Data portability

  20. Block Adult Sites Automatically. Block Selected Websites. Turn Safe Search On forever. Track Kids Activity on the Computer. How to protect children from inappropriate content ?

  21. Since you don’t want kids to accidentally see any of sites that contain adult content, an easy option for blocking such sites isOpenDNS.You don’t have to download or install any software – just go to opendns.com/start in any Internet browser, choose the “Computer” option (let’s keep it simple) and follow the instructions on the screen. Once your computer is configured with OpenDNS, go to Dashboard -> Settings and set the Filtering level to either Moderate or High. Now whenever your kid mistakenly types a URL of some adult site in the browser (e.g. whitehouse.com instead of whitehouse.gov) or clicks a link that may be pointing to an inappropriate site, the OpenDNS filters will match the address of that site against their own database of adults sites and if there’s a match, the underlying web page won’t be displayed on the child’s computer. Block Adult Sites Automatically

  22. The filtering option in OpenDNS is great for blocking an entire category of websites on your computer but if you are looking to block only selected sites (e.g. Orkut.com or MySpace.com) because your kids are too young to waste time on these sites, here’s a tip. • Run theHostsman software (it’s a freeware for Windows) and press Ctrl+O to open the hosts file editor. Click the “Add” icon and type the URLs of all the websites that you want to block on the child’s computer. Hit Save and close the hostsman application. • None of the blocked sites will ever open in any of the browsers installed on your child’s computer unless someone manually deletes the record from thehosts file. Block Selected Websites

  23. Google, Bing, Yahoo and most other search engines allow you to search the web (and images) in “Safe Search” mode meaning you are less likely to encounter images or web pages in search results that may not be appropriate for children. But the only problem with this approach is that it uses cookies so if you clear the browser cache, the “safe search” preference will be lost as well. Luckily, you can force the “strict filtering” option in your browser even if the parent or the kid forgot to turn that option on himself. Turn Safe Search On forever.

  24. You get to know what sites are they visiting, how much time are they spending with IM programs, what software applications are they running more frequently and how much time do they spend on individual sites. Track Kids Activity on the Computer.
