  2. Overview of Interlock Products • What is an interlock ? • A breathalyser designed to be fitted to a vehicle in order to prevent drink driving. • Often known as a “BAIID” i.e. aBreath Alcohol Ignition Interlock Device

  3. Overview of Interlock Products • What is an interlock ? • Usually comprises of two components. • Breathalyser connected either by wire or wirelessly to • A Control Unit (Immobiliser) responsible for the blocking and unblocking of the vehicle Starter Circuit.

Overview of Interlock Products • How do I use an interlock ? • Before you can drive an equipped vehicle you have to provide a breath sample to the breathalyser. • If the measured alcohol volume is less than the cutoff value then your vehicle will be able to be started. • If the measured alcohol level is equal to or above the cutoff value then your vehicle will not be able to be started.

  8. Overview of Interlock Products • Where are interlocks used ? • Commercial • To prevent the use of vehicles by intoxicated drivers in industry or in public services. e.g. • Coaches and buses • Taxis • Trams • Delivery vans • Trains • Fleet vehicles

  9. Overview of Interlock Products • Where are interlocks used ? • Law Enforcement • Many countries use Interlocks as part of the punishment/rehabilitation process after DUI conviction. Including: • USA • Canada • Sweden • Netherlands • France (soon)

  10. Overview of Interlock Products • Who makes interlocks ? • WE DO !!!! • Market leaders in the UK • Currently expanding into France, Scandinavia, Spain/Portugal, South Africa and soon into the USA

Overview of Interlock Products • What makes an Interlock breathalyser different from a “normal” breathalyser? • “Anti-circumvention”, Unmanned, which means we have to detect: • Balloons • Bicycle pumps • Blowing through water, long lengths of tubing, cooled lengths of tubing. • Blowing through Kitty Litter • Sucking through mouthpiece exhaust

  12. Overview of Interlock Products • What makes an Interlock breathalyser different from a “normal” breathalyser ? • We also have to operate during and/or after • Severe vibration tests for 96 hrs • Extreme temp/humidity cycling for 5 days • Temperatures from -45°C to +85°C

Overview of Interlock Products • Do Interlocks comply with any international Standards ? • CENELEC (European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardisation) • EN 50436 Part 1 Offender programme use • EN 50436 Part 2 Commercial or personal use • NHTSA 1992 Specification. USA • E-mark . Automotive standard for electrical and electronic devices

Overview of Interlock Products • A Short History Lesson • May 2013 DS-15 approved to EN 50436-2 (Lion CU) • June 2013 DS-15 gains UTAC approval for use in French School Bus Programme. • July 2013 DS-20 submitted to US Test House for NHTSA Approval • December 2013 DS-20 approved to EN50436-2 as well as 50436-1. • January 2014 DS20 approved to NHTSA specification
