Substance abuse is on the rise in New Jersey. In fact, the state is considered a hotbed for illegal drugs, alcohol, and prescription medication abuse. Alcohol abuse and opioid addiction are primary causes for concern, and research shows that heroin overdoses happen in the Garden State at three times the average national rate. Since 2004, there have been more than 14,000 deaths caused by drug overdoses.
