  1. JOC Peer coaching

  2. What do we mean by year exceeding coaching and why did we incorporate it? • Maybe I should start by telling why we have integrated year exceeding coaching in our lessons. • One of the competences that we want our students to achieve at the end of their three-year training, is that they (as a novice nurse) are able to guide and coach our nurse students. 3. What do we mean by year exceeding coaching and why did we incorporate it? • If we expect that our students are able to guide and coach nurse students, then we must prepare our students, educate them and train them so they will be able to do so. • How can we prepare and train our students in this? • By letting them coach first year or second year students. Titel van footer

  4. Preparations • They have to read several articles about coaching in nursing and situational leadership • There are 4 cases made available forthe third year students. They choose 1 case and prepare this. Each case contains at least four nursing skills on the level of the students they will coach. The students need to draw up a care planning. They must also prepare themselves on both theoretical and practical area of the skills mentioned in the chosen case. Titel van footer

  5. Expectations of the thirdyearstudents • What do we expectfromourthirdyearstudents: • A goodand complete preparation • Each student coaches 2 first or second yearstudents(mostlyduring 2 hours) • A realistic care planning • Intervenewhennecessary • Givestudents correct information • A demonstrationwhennecessary • A role model forfirst and second yearsstudents Titel van footer

  6. Benefits for the first & second yearstudents • Individual coaching • Informalmoment witholderstudents • (information aboutexaminations, lector,…) • Extra practice time for the nursing skills • They get advicewhenperforming the nursing skills • Theylearnuseful tricks Titel van footer

  7. Role of the lector • During these coaching sessions, there is in each classroom a lector available. • The lector has toobserve the thirdyearstudentson the followingpoints: • Preparation and care planning • Makes clear agreements with the students? • Can accept feedback? • Gives feedback to students in a constructive manner (points out the strengths and working points) • Gives accurate information? • Normally, the lector doesn’t come between them only when strictly necessary Titel van footer

  8. Where will this be charged/be graded? • For the first and second yearstudentsthisis only a practice time. This is not graded. • For the third years students this will be graded for management of practical competence training. Titel van footer
