  1. Value and Respect everyone (1) This Friday, October 18th, is Anti-slavery day. This is a day to raise awareness of people who are being treated as salves today, many of whom are children. Slavery has existed almost as long as human beings themselves, having been recorded as far back as the 5th Century BC. Many people were treated as dogs- locked in chains around their hands, feet and even their necks. Beatings with whips was common practice and body parts were often cut off as punishment. People were not seen as humans but as objects –things that could be bought and sold for money. Reflection- “We’re all human aren’t we? Every human life is worth the same and worth saving.” (JK Rowling)

  2. Value and Respect everyone (2) So when was slavery stopped? The Abolition of The Slave Trade Act was finally passed in 1807 and all slaves were freed over the next twenty years. How shocking then that slavery is still happening in the 21st century. Millions of people are being treated as slaves in parts of Africa, South Asia, Europe and Latin America. Although slavery is illegal much of it goes on behind closed doors, and in some places the laws are not enforced enough. Reflection- “ Those who deny freedom to others, deserve it not for themselves.” (Abraham Lincoln)

  3. Value and Respect everyone (3) Anti-slavery day is also referred to as Anti-Trafficking day. Each year about 2000 men, women and children are rescued from trafficking in the UK but this is just the tip of the iceberg. There are thought to be about 5000 victims of trafficking in the UK. Alexei came to the UK from Lithuania, but struggled to find a job until a man offered him labouring work. He was forced to live in a shed with several other men with no electricity or water. His passport was taken away and he received no pay, in fact he was told he owed money to his captors for rent and food. If he complained or tried to run away he was beaten.
