  2. INSC310 Syllabus Questions 1. A clicker is used for your lecture participation grade. If your clicker is broken or has dead batteries, can you still get credit that day? (a) yes (b) no 2. How many participation grades can you drop? 3. This course uses an online homework system called LON-CAPA (30%). Have you used LON-CAPA before? (a) yes (b) no 4. How many LON-CAPA homework scores can you drop?

Activity Containers • In your container are some items that you will use frequently throughout the semester. • It is your responsibility to maintain them. • Please clean and dry all items before putting them back. • If you are missing an item you should make sure that you notify me, or replace it yourself. • Please write this list on construction paper (leave room in case we add things), along with your table #. Basics: Metric (or SI) System • Metric system is a “foreign” language for many of us, but we use “SI” in science! • If you don’t “think” in metric, then you must PRACTICE converting from metric to “common” units EVERY time you see it! 1 meter= 39.4 inches (~3.3 ft) or 1 inch = 2.54 cm • How many inches are in 10 feet? • How many feet are in 10 inches?

  11. ACTIVITY with Metric Measurement • Use ruler or meter stick to measure common items and start “thinking metric!” • How can you “remember” the size of a meter, cm, or mm?

ACTIVITY with Metric Measurement (wrap-up) Give your groups interpretation, then engage class for additional comments • What was the point of this activity? • Explain how you would introduce this to your class. • Where do you see a student having difficulty with this? • What changes or extensions could you do to this activity?

  13. Questions: LengthConversions If a wire is 0.01 m thick, how many millimeters is that?(click in numeric answer to nearest integer!) A typical door is 2 m tall. That would be 6 feet and how many inches? How many meters in a mile?

  16. ACTIVITY with Solid/Liquid Volume Demonstration 1 Liter of Blocks Equal Volume Shapes • Each block has dimensions 2 cm × 2 cm × 2 cm ( = 8 cm3 or cc or ml). • How many blocks does it take to make 1000 cm3 or 1 liter? Equal Volume Containers

Mass: Kilogram 1 kg= 2.2 pounds • The official kilogram is a cylinder composed of 90% platinum and 10% iridium located in Paris. • How can you quickly calculate this conversion in your head? • NOTE: Actually, kilograms are a measure of “mass” and pounds are a measure of weight (or gravitational force). The conversion above is only true on the Earth!
