  1. What is SMP?(Senior Medicare Patrol) This document was supported, in part, by grant number 90-MP-0167 from the Administration on Aging, Department of Health & Human Services.   2. The Problem The Medicare program loses billions of dollars each year as a result of errors, fraud, and abuse.* *Source: DHHS Office of Inspector General

Background According to Congress, “Senior citizens are also our best front line defense against these losses.” In 1997, U.S. Administration on Aging established 12 grant-funded demonstration projects. Missouri SMP Project has been administered through Care Connection since 1997. There is a SMP Project in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam, the U.S. Virgin Islands.

  4. SMP Mission Empower and assist Medicare beneficiaries, their families, and caregivers to prevent, detect, and report health care fraud, errors, and abuse through outreach, counseling, and education.

  7. How • Recruiting, Screening, and training SMP Specialists • SMP Specialists perform one or more of the roles: • One on One Specialist • Distribution Specialist • Presentation Specialist • SMP Specialists communicate the message of Protect, Detect, and Report

  8. SMP Message: Protect Do not give out your personal information to anyone you do not know! • Medicare Number • Social Security Number • Bank Account Information • Credit Card Number(s)

  9. SMP Message: Detect Compare your Medicare Summary Notice (MSN) to your health care activity and look for: • Charges for something you did not receive • Items billed twice • Services that were not ordered by your doctor
