  8. State color • Alaska doesn’t have an official state color.

  9. State seal • Alaska’s state seal was originally designed in 1910 when Alaska was still a territory. • The seal represents The Northern Lights, mining, rail and marine transportation, agriculture, and the importance of seafood and wildlife to the economy.

  12. State flag • Adopted the flag in 1959. • Designed by a 13 year old boy in 1926. • Blue represents the sky, sea, and lakes. • 8 stars form the Big Dipper and the North Star. • The North Star represents the northern most state.

  14. State coin • Says “The Great Land” under The North Star. • The coin also has a grizzly bear in a stream catching salmon to represent fishing and the wildlife you can find in Alaska.

  15. Historical significance • Alaska was claimed by Russia until 1959 when it became the 49th state in the US. • The most powerful earthquake in North America happened in Alaska in 1964 with a magnitude of 9.2. • The Trans-Alaska pipeline is used to transport oil from northern Alaska since 1977.

  16. Climate • Mid-latitude oceanic climate in the south. • Subarctic oceanic climate in the north. • Temperatures reach 90s in the summer and -60 ̊or below in the winter. • Less than 10 inches of precipitation every year.

  18. Location • Alaska is in the northwest extremity of North America. • Canada is to the east of Alaska with Russia farther to the west.

  19. Capital • Juneau • Located south of the Juneau Icefield. • It’s the only state capital in America not accessible by road.

  20. Food or crops produced • 100 day growing season limits what can be grown. • Potatoes • Carrots • Lettuce • Cabbage

  21. Cost of living • Alaska has one of the highest cost of living rates in the US. • Usually 25% of the average pay check.
