The Engineering and Technology Board (etb) • Set up in January 2002 • To inspire better understanding and enjoyment of Science, Engineering and Technology (SET) • Work in partnership with industry, the Government, the professions and the education community • Aim to attract the best minds of a new generation to the sector…. • …and to retain and support those already in it

  3. The Engineering in the Olympics campaign • A year-long campaign to raise the profile and broaden the appeal of SET in an Olympic year • Unique partnership with the British Olympic Association (BOA)

  4. Why have we done it? • SET is often portrayed as a closed specialist area of limited appeal to the general public • By connecting SET to the Olympics, we will demonstrate the contribution of the sector to the world’s biggest public event, the Olympic Games, in an Olympic year • EitO is a SET wide campaign that provides opportunities for all SET organisations to become involved, in patnership with the etb.

  5. Where we are • Official launch November 25 2003 with the BOA & gold medalist Jonathan Edwards • More than 25 national and trade journalists attended

  6. Campaign elements • Schools Olympic lecture tour • Student design engineering award scheme • Regional roadshows • Debating forums

Schools lecture tour • Aimed at 11-14 year olds • Nationwide tour delivering more than 40 lectures, mainly to schools • February – August 2004 • Delivered in partnership with the Sports Technology department, University of Sheffield and the Institute of Physics • Lecture and resource materials downloadable from www.engineeringintheolympics.com

Student engineering design award scheme • Open to FE and HE students studying design, engineering, technology or any combination thereof • Students can enter now; closing date for designs is 4 May 2004; winning entries announced in July 2004. • Total prize money of £30,000 • Delivered in partnership with the RSA • Students invited to explore any aspect of SET associated with hosting a major sporting events…. • …environment to equipment, stadia to security, scoreboards to seating

Regional roadshow • A touring exhibition aimed at the general public which will take up temporary homes in shopping centres, at football grounds etc • Roadshow launches in March 2004 • Delivered by the Campaign to Promote Engineering (cpe) and Sport by Design • Interactive exhibits to highlight the technology involved in Olympic sports

Debating forums • Expert panels to debate and resolve key SET challenges for any country bidding to host an Olympic Games • 4 themes: construction, human performance, transport and impact upon the economy • London-based and regional forums with experts from the sector to lead and inform the debate • Accompanied by national, regional and trade media activity; final report delivered to relevant bodies, eg, Government • Construction forum kicks off in March 2004

  11. How you can become involved in Engineering in the Olympics • Facilitate etb access to sector knowledge, highlight key issues and provide relevant expertise • Support delivery of the programme on the ground • Work in partnership with the etb on content and programme design
