CATALOGUE DESCRIPTION • Students spend one full semester as interns in a company, government agency, or business. • Under faculty supervision, students fulfill various assignments to acquire first-hand knowledge of a working environment. • Students are required to write a final report detailing the technical aspects of their internship, with three-page written review/reflection. • This course is graded on a Pass/Fail scale. (Prerequisite: 75Credit hours)

  3. Goal • Prepares graduates for careers in IT or to pursue advanced academic degrees

COURSE OUTCOMES • Upon completing this course students should be able to: • Identify the structure and operations of the workplace • Recognize the employee rights and responsibilities • Apply IT knowledge in the workplace • Function effectively, professionally and ethically on teams • Communicate effectively and technically orally and in writing • Recognize the need for continuing professional development

  7. IMPORTANT DATES (Fall 2010)

Grading Policy • This course is graded on a Pass/Fail scale. • The student’s grade is based on • Weakly status reports                           20% • Field supervisor evaluation                  50% • Final reports and presentations          20% • Poster                                            10%

  9. Participation Policy • If the intern is absent from her/his work placement without permission for more than 5 days, she/he will get a final grade “F” regardless of all other activities. • If the intern failed to pass the average grade of the field supervisor evaluation, she/he will get a final grade “F” regardless of all other activities. • If the intern failed to submit 3 weekly reports, she/he will get a final grade “F” regardless of all other activities.

  10. Faculty Internship Supervisor • Meet with his/hers students to discuss the progress of the assigned internship (Two internship visits per term) • Review and mark the student weekly reports (via http://www.uaeu.ac.ae/iwil/index.shtml) • Evaluate student performance and determine whether the student should receive credit for the internship (i.e PASS grade) • Evaluation Tools: meetings with students, meetings with the Field supervisor, internship weekly reports, final internship report, poster and final presentation.

  11. Field Internship Supervisor • Develop a training plan for the student • Evaluate the student’s ability to apply their academic knowledge to the job • Evaluate the level of preparedness of their students as it applies to skills (English competency; communication; team-working, etc. ) and knowledge needed to perform successfully in their work placement • Complete and sign the Final Evaluation Form, covering the items listed above.

  12. Junior Exhibition Course • ONLY students who are on the 155 credit hours curriculum are required to take a junior exhibition course in parallel with their internship course. • Registered students can work in small groups (maximum 3-4 students per group) or individually (one student per group) to undertake full end-to-end development of a moderate project plan, taking it from initial concept through the final delivery. • Project topics can range from applied IT development, prototypes to assignment on applied research.

  13. Important Documents • Course syllabus (Sp10_ITBP299_S): this document presents catalogue description, course outcomes and important dates regarding internship this term. It also includes the grading policy, marking scheme and students' participation rules. • Final Internship report: this document lists the requirements of the internship report (EVERY intern student must submit an internship report at the end of their internship, as per the dates specified in the course syllabus)  • Junior Exhibition report: this document summarizes the requirements of the junior exhibition course (ONLY intern students who are on the 155 credit hours curriculum need to submit a junior-exhibition report at the end of their internship)  • Field Supervisor Evaluation Form:  At the end of the term, every filed supervisor is required to fill one form for every student he/she supervises to evaluate the student’s work-learning experience. This feedback is an important component in evaluating students' final grades and assessing the internship program at large.  • Faculty advisor Evaluation Form:  At the end of the term, every faculty advisor is required to fill one form for every student he/she supervises to evaluate the student’s work-learning experience. This feedback will contribute to the students final grades and help us assess the internship program at large.  • Student Evaluation Form: EVERY intern student is required to submit/email a student evaluation form to the internship unit at the end of the term. This feedback will be merely used to assess the internship program.   

  14. Final Internship Report • Students will discuss their experience in applying classroom theory and knowledge to real situations • Students will demonstrate their knowledge of the organizational structure and mission, and provide insight into their employer's business and/or operations. • Students will demonstrate how their internship experience has contributed to their knowledge of IT. • Students will identify those classes or areas of knowledge that materially assisted them in the performance of their duties at their internship. Once having identified classes or areas of knowledge, the student will perform an analysis of how these classes were of benefit. • Students will then identify areas of knowledge and classes in which they were deficient and could have better prepared them for the internship experience.
