Clean School Bus Initiative • $3,596,583 in grants awarded to help replace, repower or retrofit 1,891 buses with exhaust controls across NC. • 3.4 tons of NOx reduced annually • 9.1 tons of PM2.5 reduced annually • Department of Public Instruction adopted policies that reduced unnecessary idling.

  3. Monitoring • 46 sites • Dedicated land line for polling • $60/month • Central EDAS dedicated phone lines • $740/month (20,000+ calls @ $0.03 each) • Cellular data modems and internet access • Faster and cheaper • $5/month w/ unlimited data plan for $38/month/site

  4. Monitoring • New data modem costs $600/each • But pay back period is ~11 months • Internet connection allows operators and maintenance staff to remotely access the monitors • Reduces the number of trips to the site • Total savings: $~30,000/year on polling + improved efficiency for field staff
