  1. Chapter Seven The Church is Holy

  2. In the last chapter, we discussed the first mark of the church: ONE • Now we will address the second mark, which is: • HOLY • What does it mean to be holy? Can we be as Holy as Jesus was?

  3. Recipe to Holiness • Healthy state of mind • Positive way to view others • Positive way to view ourselves • Sanctification • Quiet acceptance of the way things are

  4. What is the process for Holiness? How did Saint Joseph become Holy? Despite being considered as “just a man”, Saint Joseph is revered in the Catholic church Praise bestowed by Holy Ghost Chosen by God to father Jesus Spouse of the Virgin Mother Remained faithful  Became Patron of the Church

  5. How can we take similar steps? St. Joseph Modern Step • Praise bestowed by  Sacraments Holy Ghost 2. Chosen by God 3. Spouse of Mary (what is a calling?) 4. Remained Faithful

  6. Ingredients to Holiness • Scripture: God’s word, we better understand our challenge in achieving salvation • Saint: examples of heroic holiness • Penance: Help us change our lives • Sacramentals: rosaries, holy water, crucifixes • Devotions: help us reflect on Jesus’ life

  7. Holy Through Wisdom • Ability to put God first • Allows you to see things from God’s point of view • Pray to hear the wisdom within you • “God is first” –Saint Thomas More • Thomas was martyred for his love of wisdom and God’s will • When faced with a difficult decision between morality and his life, he chose morality.

  8. Album of Saints • For each gift of the spirit we will discuss, you will find a corresponding saint • First page: Holy Through Wisdom • Find and research a saint who stayed true to his/her beliefs while using the gift of wisdom • How did this saint use the gift of Wisdom to put God first? • How did he/she make decisions based on how God sees things? • Brief background information on saint • Conflict he/she faced • Image of saint

  9. DO NOW: 3/27 • Define the Holy Spirit gift of WISDOM in your own words • Wisdom is…

  10. Wisdom Representative Check List • Did your saint… • See God at work in his/her life and in the world • Well read in history, art and philosophy to better understand the human condition • Acknowledge God as the father, and the dignity of others as his children • Recognize God in everything and everyone

  11. Do Now: 3/30 • Q1: In our efforts to become more holy individuals, do you think it is more important to be “book smart” or “street smart”? • Q2: In daily living, do you think it is more important to be book smart or street smart?

  12. Gift of Understanding

  13. Jesus and the Blind Man • All we need to do is ask!!! • Jesus came upon a blind man. He immediately asked “What can I do for you?” To a reader, this might seem obvious—to see, but still he asked, not to make any assumptions. The blind man asked not only his vision, but to see the truth of all things. • How are we similar to the blind man? How should be approach our time with God?

  14. Holy Through Understanding • Case study: Barney Casey • Had academic difficulties • Became a priest: took the name Father Solanus • His teachers recommended his priestly duties be severely limited due to his academic difficulty • Instead he offered to help people in distress by listening to their problems • His teachers soon discovered he had an innate sense of empathy and was able to understand others • This understanding allowed him insights into the elusive truths of faith • His heroic virtue and sanctity drew him one step towards being canonized.

  15. Holy through Counsel • Helps us to know what to do in life, to make good decisions, and to accept our responsibility to care for others • Helps us to seek advice from others and follow it • We use it when we participate in the sacrament of penance

  16. Saint Catherine • From 1305 to 1378 seven popes chose to live in France • Saint Catherine believed that the pope should lead the Church from Rome • “Be a man, Father! Arise!...begin the reform of the church by appointing worthy priests!” • It was unusual for a woman to tell the pope what to do • Catherine did pray much, and had no fear in following God’s will • She was given the title Doctor of the Church • Catherine exercised counsel

  17. Easter • What are your Easter customs? • During this season we remember that Jesus is resurrected. Just as Jesus’ followers were prepared the proclaim the good news of his Resurrection, we too can prepare to live out our faith better. • Why is this the most important event in our faith?

  18. Jesus’ Followers • Who are examples of good people that died before Jesus came? • The resurrection of Jesus is told through four different accounts • Matthew 28:1–10 • Mark 16:1–11 • Luke 24:1–12 • John 20:1–18 • Research these accounts, and in a small skit, share findings with class • List three major events that happen

  19. Renewing our Baptismal Promises • Do you believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth? • Do you believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was born of the Virgin Mary, was crucified, died, and was buried, rose from the dead, and is now seated at the right hand of the Father? • Do you believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting?

  20. Matthew 28:1-10

  21. Mark 16:1-11

  22. Luke 24:1-12

  23. John 20:1-18

  24. What is your first impression of the picture below?

  25. Holy through Fortitude • 1927: Mexico was under religious upheaval as Christians were being executed • Priests were killed and churches were burned down • Saint Jose Sanchez del Rio was inspired at such a young age, he pleaded to join the fight in protecting the Christian faith • On the way to his execution, he experienced brutal punishment and pain but did not falter • The soles of his feet were cut off and he was forced to walk on salt • He was told he could spare his life if he admitted death to Jesus • He only continued to announce: “Long life Christ the king!”

  26. Fortitude • Followers of Christ have shown heroic fortitude • The risks you take to follow Christ may be small, but they are challenging • It is also the gift of courage, giving your inner strength to do what is right in the face of difficulties

  27. Piety • What is the gift of piety? • What are two ways we show piety? • How did Saint Chrysostom show piety? • How can reverence be practiced in the following situations? • When the homily is being preached • When someone is talking • When you receive holy communion • When dinner is completed and your parents are tired

  28. Prayer to the Holy Spirit "Oh God, by the light of the Holy Spirit you have taught the hearts of your faithful. In the same Spirit, help us to know what is truly right and always to rejoice in your consolation. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen."

  29. Our Objective: • How much we receive from a sacrament depends on our own openness and disposition • For example when we are confirmed, God gives us the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit • However these gifts are not magic, but rather skills we must practice to master • Today we will better familiarize ourselves with these gifts, reflect on how we can practice them daily, and the uncover the most important step in embracing them

  30. The Radiant Face of MosesExodus 34:29-35 When Moses came down from Mount Sinai with the two tablets of the covenant law in his hands, he was not aware that his face was radiant because he had spoken with the Lord. When Aaron and all the Israelites saw Moses, his face was radiant, and they were afraid to come near him.But Moses called to them; so Aaron and all the leaders of the community came back to him, and he spoke to them. Afterward all the Israelites came near him, and he gave them all the commands the Lord had given him on Mount Sinai. ~~~ When Moses finished speaking to them, he put a veil over his face. But whenever he entered the Lord’s presence to speak with him, he removed the veil until he came out. And when he came out and told the Israelites what he had been commanded, 35 they saw that his face was radiant. Then Moses would put the veil back over his face until he went in to speak with the Lord.

  31. In the bible, two versions of fear can be found… • Pachad - FearDread, Terror, To be startled • Yare - To stand in aweReverence, Respect, Recognizing the power and position of God and giving Him proper respect. • Pslam 22:23-Ye that fear the Lord, praise him; all ye the seed of Jacob, glorify him; and fear him, all ye the seed of Israel.

  32. Holy Through Fear of Lord “So he was there with the LORD forty days and forty nights. He neither ate bread nor drank water. And he wrote on the tablets the words of the covenant, the Ten Commandments.” • Saint Francis possessed the gift of fear of the lord, also called wonder and awe • He marveled at God’s greatness and love • This gift kept him from offending God • He practiced this gift by rejecting wealth, giving away his possessions, and dressing modestly • We always act out of respect and knowledge of the lord
