  1. Stopping Distance Teacher: Chelsea Hoglund Summer Institute 2011

  2. DEMONSTRATION OF STOPPING DISTANCES

  3. SIMULATION

  4. WHAT DID YOU NOTICE?

  5. Reaction Distance Braking Distance Total Distance = Reaction Distance + Braking Distance

  6. NEW VOCABULARY TERMS??

  7. FORMULA TO CALCULATE STOPPING DISTANCE Assuming Reaction Time is 2.5 Seconds • Reaction Distance V = Velocity • Braking Distance Assuming grade is 0% V = Velocity • Total Distance = R + B

  8. SCENARIO 1: If you are driving 34 mph and see a cat in the road 200 feet ahead will you stop in time to avoid hitting the cat?

  9. SCENARIO 2: You are driving 48 mph and see a mother duck and her ducklings crossing the road 550 feet ahead. If you stop now, will you be able to stop in time to avoid hitting them?
