Online survey of foreign residents in Taiwan drawn from ECCT membership, TES parents, ACC members, ICRT listeners, CSC data base – total 186 responses; Sept/Oct 2014

  14. BUT the safety of Taiwan’s roads is a serious concern “Taiwan is a pretty good place to live, but some issues I really hope could be addressed by the government. There's almost no respect of basic driving rules and, even when there's a policeman at a crossroads, it's very common to see drivers ignoring traffic lights. Very few people know the concepts of giving way/having the right to go at crossroads; being on the road always feels unsafe.” “My most important issue is traffic law awareness and enforcement. Every traffic law is violated constantly on every road and there are rarely consequences for law-breakers. The government really needs to put in some more effort to enforce the laws and educate drivers about them.”

Difficulties with making local online purchases • Language barrier – most websites are only in Chinese or have limited/poorly translated English • Many websites won’t accept ARC numbers; they’re configured only for local ID numbers • Problems with poor design, inefficient navigation, unclear instructions, frequently broken links; just not user-friendly • Many sites won’t accept foreign credit cards • Unattractive to look at – too cluttered, not well designed

Difficulties in opening a local bank account • Cumbersome, bureaucratic procedures; too many forms to complete; too much waiting and switching between different staff • Too much supporting paperwork required • Has to be done in person • Need for guarantors • Lack of consistency in requirements between different banks • Lack of English language service, even in international banks • “Not an international banking environment in any way, shape or form.”

  41. Can we get on the internet easily? Can we get good medical care? What if we have an emergency? Can we find a nice house? Can we manage our finances? …with reliable power and water supplies? Is the place safe? What about schools for the kids?

  42. It is a country in which we as a family are very happy to be living. I would anticipate being here for many more years.

  43. Basically it's great apart from the fact that everyone drives like a lunatic.

  44. Great place to live, but like everywhere else...not perfect.
