Introduction • Language means communicating thoughts and feelings. • English is the widely spoken language;its a common means of communication. • Mother tongue of Britain. • Historical accidents lead to use of English as native language in many countries. • English serves as purpose of communication for National integration,growth in science and technology. • Worlds knowledge is enshrined by English.

  3. World Englishes • The usage pattern of Englishin different countries. • Sociolinguistic histories, multicultural backgrounds influence the use of English. • Braj kachrus model of world English. • Classification of world Englishes • Native language • Second language • Foreign language

Analysis of three circles • Inner circle • Originally took shape across the world in the first diaspora. • Transportation of english speakers from England carried the language to Australia, Zealand and North America. • The inner circle represents the traditional ,historical and sociolinguistic bases of english in these regions where it is used as primary language or native language. • Outer circle • English was produced by the second diaspora of english. • Language spread through colonialism in Asia and Africa • Use as lingua franca for higher education, the legislature and judiciary national commerce and so on. • Expanding circle • English plays neither historical or government role • Use only as medium of international communication. • Used in business, trade diplomacy and other spheres of global activity.

English as second language • Learning language for specific purpose. • Medium of instruction for people who don’t know the language of the state. • India with its diverse languages use english as medium for communication. • It is difficult to learn due to influence of mother tongue. • India establishes its tie up with other countries using this language.

  6. English as first language. • Used in countries such as Britain, U.S.A, Australia , New Zealand. • Some countries use it due to political reason. • The people have strong hold in the correct usage of the language.

  7. English as foreign language • Countries where english is use for specific language. • For international communication , trade and commerce. • They don't use english in school or for any educational purpose. • Countries such as china, Russia so on.

  8. Utilitarian Aim • Two aim for teaching english is • Language aspect • Literary aspect • We should accomplish both the language and literary aspect of english to master it. The language aspect is such as building words and sentences, pronunciation, spelling and grammar. And literary aspect such as building words and sentences , expressing ideas, feeling and experience. • The role of english teacher is to make the students accomplish these.

  9. Objectives of Teaching English in India • “We in our anger and hatred against the British people should not throw away the baby(English) with the bathe water(English people)”.- C. Rajagopalacharya • Its richness, flexibility ,elegance , dignity seem to have made it universally popular from the time of our pre-independence period. • “The language link is greater link between us and english speaking people than any political link or any thing else.”- Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru.
