  5. School Hours at BGHS Excel Period (zero period) 7:30 am to 8:20 am 1st – 6th periods (regular school day) 8:30 am to 3:05 pm

  6. Words you need to know… • Credit---Official certification that a student has completed a course. At BGHS, we have whole (1) credit courses and half (1/2) credit courses. • Semester---One of the two divisions of an academic year. 1st semester runs from the start of school to winter break. 2nd semester runs from when we return from winter break (January) to then end of the school year. • Transcript---A student’s academic record. • Excel Period---Also known as zero period. Time allowed for an extra class at the beginning of the day,7:30-8:20 am.

  7. Math Information • Beginning with the class of 2012, Math WILL be taken each year of high school. • All students WILL be required to take FOUR years of Math. • This can include, Pre-Algebra, Algebra I, Accelerated Algebra I, Geometry, Accelerated Geometry, Geometry Pre-AP, Algebra II, Accelerated Algebra II, Algebra II Pre-AP, Algebra III, Pre-Calculus, Pre-Calculus Pre-AP, AP Calculus, AP Statistics, and Math 116.

  8. Diploma Choices • Merit Diploma 22 credits minimum required • Comprehensive Diploma 24 credits minimum required • Commonwealth Diploma Issued by Kentucky Department of Education.

  9. Pre-College Curriculum(classes that must be completed successfully in high school before entering college) • English 4 credits English I, II, III, IV • Math 3 credits Alg. I, Geometry, Alg. II • Science 3 credits Credits to include life science, physical science, and earth/space science (at least one lab course). • Social Studies 3 credits From U. S. History, Economics, Government, World Geography, and World Civilization. • Health / P.E. 1 credit ½ Health, ½ P.E. • History and Appreciation of Arts Embedded • Foreign Language 2 credits Spanish, French, German, Arabic • Electives 5 credits 3 must be rigorous (recommended strongly: 1 or more courses that develop computer literacy.) TOTAL CREDITS = 22 (17 REQUIRED CREDITS; 5 ELECTIVE CREDITS

  10. Merit Diploma • English 4 credits English I, II, III, IV • Science 3 credits Any three science classes to include; life science, physical science, and earth/space science. • Math 3 credits Alg. I, Geometry, Alg. II • Social Studies 3 credits World Civ., U. S. History, Political Science • Health / P.E. 1 credit ½ credit health, ½ credit P.E. • Humanities Embedded in curriculum or by passing band, choir or art. TOTAL REQUIRED CREDITS = 14 PLUS ELECTIVE CREDITS = 8 (minimum) TOTAL CREDITS=22

  11. Comprehensive Diploma • English 4 credits English I, II, III, IV • Science 3 credits Biology and Chemistry or Physics or Earth Science, plus one additional science credit. • Math 3 credits Alg. I, Geometry, Alg. II • Social Studies 3 credits World Civ., U. S. History, Political Science • Health / P.E. 1 credit ½ credit health, ½ credit P.E. • Foreign Language 2 credits two classes from the same language • Humanities Embedded in curriculum or by passing band, choir or art. TOTAL REQUIRED CREDITS = 16 PLUS ELECTIVE CREDITS = 8 (minimum) TOTAL CREDITS=24

COMMONWEALTH DIPLOMA PROGRAM • Successful completion of all minimum requirements of the pre-college curriculum. • Successful completion (i.e., receiving a “C”) of at least four (4) courses as described in the AP Program Course. • English (1 course) • Science or Math (1 course selected from biology, chemistry, physics or calculus) • Foreign Language (1 course selected from French, German, Latin or Spanish) • One additional AP course (selected from English, Science, Foreign Language, History, Computer Science, Political Science, Music, or Art). • Completion of AP examinations in 3 of the 4 required AP courses as stipulated by the Kentucky Department of Education. • Students receiving a minimum composite score of 8 on the three required exams will be reimbursed for those three exams.

Grade Point AverageClass Rank • A temporary GPA is figured at the end of each year and a final one is done during the senior year. • Rank in class is determined by the numerical grade point average. • The final averages of all courses are counted in figuring the numerical GPA. • The student receives a decimal GPA based on a 4.0 scale with the following values assigned A=4 B=3 C=2 D=1 F=0

  15. Kentucky Educational Excellence Scholarship (KEES)Awarded to graduating seniors who will attend a Kentucky College, university or technical school. The amount received will be based on each year’s GPA and a one time bonus for the ACT score.
