  2. Fashion and Fads: 1) Soda Fountains 2) Poodle Skirts 3) Drive-in Theaters

  3. The Arts and Entertainment Music: The most popular songs in the 50s are ‘Johnny B. Goode’ by Chuck Berry, ‘Hound Dog’ by Elvis Presley, and ‘Great Balls of Fire’ by Jerry Lee Lewis. Movies: The most popular movies in the 50s are Cinderella, North by Northwest, Rear Window, and Sunset Boulevard. Celebrities: Some of the celebrities in the 50s are Marilyn Monroe, James Dean, Elizabeth Taylor, and Doris Day.

  4. War and Politics Harry Truman and Dwight Eisenhower were the 33rd and 34th president of the U.S both being in the office in the 1950s. The Cold War started in 1947 and ended in 1991 making it go on before during and after the 1950s. The Korean War also started in 1950 and ended in 1953. The United States were apart of a defensive military allied countries in Western Europe that formed the group NATO. NATO is also known as The North Atlantic Treaty Organization. NATO was formed to go against the WarSaw Pact. Eisenhower suspended trade with U.S which had crippled the U.S’s economy. CREDITS: MS. FARLEY’S COLD WAR POWERPOINT!!!

  5. Sports • In the 1950’s, college football was actually more popular than pro football. Ohio State and Oregon's Rose Bowl in 1957 attracted 98,202 fans. • The New York Yankees won the world series 5 times during the 1950’s. • Girls played professional baseball in the 50s.

  6. Technology, Science, and Innovations: 1) Credit Card- October 31st, 1950 2)Television- October 27th, 1951 3) Chevy Corvette- October 27th, 1953

  7. Disasters 1) Assam-Tibet Earthquake August 15, 1950: This earthquake was located in Rima, and killed 1,500-3,000 people. It was the 10th largest earthquake of the 20th century. 2) Hurricane Barbara August 11, 1953: This hurricane moved ashore in eastern North Carolina and then curved back to sea. This left several injuries, some traffic accidents, and was a Category 2 on the Hurricane Scale. 3) McDonald Chapel Tornado April 15, 1956: This was a deadly tornado, which killed 25 people, injured 200 others, and produced destruction in areas of Birmingham, Alabama.
