  1. What is the Scientific Method? The scientific method is the way or methodscientists all over the world attempt to answer questions we have about nature and how nature works.

  2. Scientific Method • Usually, the scientific method starts off with someone noticing something. You could say they “observe” something.

  3. Observe! Observe! Observe!I have worked at Stacey for nine years now. Years ago, I noticed the presence of a Red Tail Hawk around our school campus. I observed at least one hawk in the large tree between E-3 and H-8 more than once. It may have even been more than one hawk, I don’t remember for sure. It was years ago and I didn’t think much of it then. I was then teaching in E-3 and would see the hawk (or hawks) quite often at my prep period which was then fourth period. Last year, I noticed two hawks nesting in the tree outside of B-1. I even saw them mating one day in the neighbor’s tree! Now I’m wondering more and more about the population of Red Tail Hawks living in our area.

  4. Ask a Question!!! Am I seeing the same hawks year after year? Are they here all the time? What do they eat? How long do they live? How can I identify them as individuals?

  5. What’s your hypothesis? Make a prediction!

  6. Design an experiment or research your question. • Sometimes you can just do a bit of research to find the answer to your question. • Other times, you must design an experiment to find your answer. • It is important to design your experiment correctly. The way you design an experiment is called your experimental design. Your experimental design should be able to yield the same results if done by other scientists. Poor experimental design will have other scientists picking on you!

  7. Analyze your data to make conclusions! • Your experiment or research should always be supported by some sort of data you’ve collected. It is your job to look at that data and make sense of it all. Make conclusions about your data.. You need to be able to explain what was learned as a result of the data you collected.

  8. Share your new knowledge! Usually, scientists share their knowledge with other scientists. That way, other scientists can do the same experiment that you did and check your scientific method. They should be able to follow your experimental design and get the same results you did.
