  1. Promoting a Collaborative Knowledge Building Classroom Lesson example in science(physics)

  2. Subject:Science(Physics) • Level:Secondary 3 Express • Topic:Electromagnetic Waves • Learning Outcomes: • state that all electromagnetic waves are transverse waves that travel with the same speed in vacuoand state the magnitude of this speed • describe the main components of the electromagnetic spectrum and their uses Lesson PlAN

  3. Description • Students are tasked to acquire ideas on electromagnetic waves by going through a lesson package from Wizlearn (Learning Management System). • Students are to collaborate with other groups on building knowledge on the properties of electromagnetic waves, the components and their applications. • Students are given opportunities to inquire through Knowledge Forum and to clarify during face-to-face discussion in this blended learning. • A common test on this topic will be used as an assessment task. Lesson PlAN

  4. Rationale • Knowledge Building Principles • Real Ideas and Authentic Problems (trying to understand the world by inquiry) • Improvable Ideas (questioning the underlying scientific concepts for phenomenon) • Rise Above (consolidation of key concepts) • Collective Responsibility for Community Knowledge (social constructivists of knowledge) Lesson PlAN

  5. Rationale • Inquiry-Based Characteristics • Process (Intrinsic motivation) • Content (Skill-building exercises linked to continuous learning) • Strategy (Think, observe, reflect, investigate, results, conclusions) • Context (Higher order thinking and extension of learning) Lesson PlAN

  6. Students are grouped with roles (Leader, Encourager, Organiser, Questioner) Lesson DeVELopment

  7. Familiarisation of Knowledge Forum (30 minutes) Lesson development

  8. Lesson PlAN

  9. Access Wizlearn lesson package (60 minutes) Lesson development

  10. Access Wizlearn lesson package (60 minutes) Lesson development

  11. Collaborate on Knowledge Forum (60 minutes) Lesson development

  12. Collaborate on Knowledge Forum (60 minutes) Lesson development

  13. Collaborate on Knowledge Forum (60 minutes) Lesson development

  14. Collaborate on Knowledge Forum (60 minutes) Lesson development

  15. (Group 1-5) • Attempt 2 Questions on Notes/Worksheet [10 mins] • Collect 2 laptops (Leader) for consolidation of ideas on EM Waves [5 + 25 mins] • Return laptops [5 mins] • (Group 6-10) • Collect 2 laptops (Leader) for consolidation of ideas on EM Waves through KF [5 + 25 mins] • Return laptops [5 mins] • Attempt 2 Questions on Notes/Worksheet [10 mins] • Clarify doubts, Face-to-Face discussion [15 mins] Lesson development

  16. SDL Construct:• Management and monitoring of own learningSDL Indicator:• Student asks questions when he/she is not sure about the lessons • Student looks for more information to help him/her understand the lessons betterSDL Activity:• Students were tasked to understand key concepts from a lesson package on electromagnetic spectrum. They have also went further to look for more information to concretise their learning through online platforms such as Youtube. Throughout the whole process, they have the opportunity to triangulate their learning by posing questions on the Knowledge Forum to strengthen their understanding of properties of electromagnetic waves. Self-directed learning

  17. CoL Construct:• Effective Group ProcessesCoL Indicator:• Asks questions to better understand group members’ ideasCoL Activity:• Students assume a role in their group which could be a leader, questioner, organiser or encourager. They use asynchronous online discussion on Knowledge Forum to pose inquiry questions and attempt to solve members’ questions as well. collaborative learning

  18. • How the use of ICT has added value to the lesson? • Allow the use of media objects such as animation and video to illustrate concepts • Ability to track completion of tasks • Allow for differentiated pace of learning for students • Use different sources of information for analysis and triangulation conclusion

  19. • How the use of ICT has transformed learning? • Greater motivation to want to inquire • Deeper learning through different sources and making sense of relevant and irrelevant information • Higher order of thinking in exploration of alternatives and making sound decision • Greater respect for other points of view in building consensus conclusion
