The crisis of remediation

The Crisis of Remediation

  • Each year about 2.5 million college freshman take math and English placement exams.

  • More than half learn they face required remediation.

  • In 2010 45% of MN high school graduates entering college required remediation.

  • Only about 22% of students that undertake remediation complete college and receive a degree.

What was liked about EdReady

  • Video and Animation was helpful

  • Liked how the video showed the problems of how to do it

  • I have ADHD and so I did get distracted a bit during the assessments but really liked the videos – the animation, color was good, the length, the problem review

  • It’s stuff that I would need for my future career; its practical

  • It shows where you are at and what you need to work on

  • It’s helpful – reviews and shows what to work on

What was liked about EdReady

  • It explains things; it’s easy to understand; explains why things are the way they are

  • I have a learning disability related to reading and writing and I like that it talks to you – the audio and animation – brings out the details in a slower format

  • I liked that it showed me what I don’t know and hone in on what I need to know

  • Liked that it kept things simple

What was liked about EdReady

  • The challenges, wanting to spend more time working on project.

  • Easy to follow and applies to different materials/math subjects.

  • I like the test, your score and what you need to work and it’s right away. It’s non-threatening and you know right away what you need to work on.

What would you tell others

  • Try it – it helped me!

  • Easy page to go to and that material is such that I enjoyed doing it.

  • They should get into it because it tells them their weaknesses and your strong points too and what to study.

Observations

  • Online and blended learning can be used to help students access personalized learning, and real-time adaptation of learning through assessments

  • EdReadyprepares students for both “credit recovery” of high school units not earned and better preparation for college-level instruction.

  • Students expressed that it would motivate them more if they were to get help with deciding on a career path and then know how math pertains to their career path.

  • Such wrap-around student development resources and activities are available on the GPS LifePlan (http://gpslifeplan.org or http://gpslifeplan.org /secondary)
