Quick Summation and Answers to Group Questions • 1) Examine how/why plasma lactate levels increase with exercise intensity. • Utilization of fast glycolysis produces lactate and • Lactate is shuttled out of the cell • The rate of appearance of lactate (Ra) is greater than the rate of disappearance of lactate (Rd) • 2) Explain how lactate contributes to exercise performance • It decreases acidity, it’s an energy source, used for gluconeogenesis and resupplies NAD+ • 3) Determine how plasma/blood lactate has been used to evaluate exercise performance and/or health • The lactate threshold is correlated with oxidative capacity. • mitochondrial density increases • increased efficiency • increased capillarity • Which all helps to increase oxidation of lactate
