  3. Getting Involved • Register with DPS • Attend training held by DPS, DUG and SFD • Contact Kitchen Manager • Recruit students/class to participate

  4. Trainings • Held in August in tandem with youth farmers’ market trainings • Make sure all paperwork is filled out • Review protocols • Pick up baskets

  5. GTC Materials • Harvest Baskets • Scale • Recording Sheet

  6. GTC Harvest Day: Preparation • Touch base with kitchen • Gather materials • Survey garden

  7. GTC Harvest Day: Work with Students • Gather students • Sick? • Hands washed? • Harvest • Rinse large visible dirt • Weigh • Record • Bring to kitchen

  8. GTC Harvest Day: In the Kitchen • Wash • Refrigerate for 24 hours • Need to be below 41°F • Add to salad bar • Payment

  9. GTC Payment • DPS records the harvest totals each week • Wholesale prices for the produce are recorded from vendor • At the end of the season, once harvest totals are verified, DPS writes checks to each garden program based upon the wholesale prices

  10. Community Gardeners • School-based community gardens managed by DUG • Community gardeners can participate • Harvest with the students or mark what is to be harvested • Donation

  11. GTC Data (2010-2013) • 26 schools • $5,194.60 sold • 4,457 pounds sold
