Solving Equations using Addition and Subtraction

Solving Equations using Addition and Subtraction. Inverse Operations. What is an inverse ? Doing the opposite of what is given EXAMPLE: Bob drove his garbage truck 8 miles. What’s the inverse? Subtract 8 miles. Subtract 10. Add 10 Subtract -2. Add -2. 8 miles. -8 miles.

  1. Solving Equations using Addition and Subtraction

  2. Inverse Operations • What is an inverse? • Doing the opposite of what is given • EXAMPLE: Bob drove his garbage truck 8 miles. What’s the inverse? • Subtract 8 miles. • Subtract 10. • Add 10 • Subtract -2. • Add -2. 8 miles -8 miles Inverses always get you back to zero! Subtract 10. (Add 10). -10 + 10 = 0 Subtract -2. (Add -2). - (-2) + -2 = 0

  3. Solve for x ! • Jimmy has 12 cases of Pepsi in his car. Crazy Joe comes along and steals 5. How many cases does Jimmy have left? • Set up as an equation: • 12 - 5 = x • - 5 = 7 • X = 7 cases Crazy Joe

  4. Solve for x ! • Crazy Joe continues to make his rounds and snags 8 cases of Dr. Pepper from Julie. Julie now only has 3 cases left. How many cases did she have to start with? Set up as an equation: x - 8 = 3 (some number minus 8 = 3 ) x = 11 cases

  5. Steps to Solve Equations! Whatever you do to one side of the “wall” (= sign), you must do to the other!

  6. Solve for x ! X – 10 = 5 + 10 + 10 x 5 + 10 x = 15 Whatever you do to one side of the “wall” (= sign), you must do to the other!

  7. You Try! X – 3 = 10 + 3 + 3 x 3 + 10 x = 13

  8. Solve for x ! X + 3 = 25 - 3 - 3 x 25 - 3 x = 22 Watch your sign!

  9. You Try! X + 17 = 77 - 17 - 17 x 77 - 17 x = 60

  10. Homework! Pg. 26 14-18 Show your work!
