  1. César Chávez Por Dana Margulies 2010

• “It’s not enough to teach our young people to be successful …so they can earn good livings and accumulate material things. • Those are worthwhilegoals. But it’s not enough to progress as individuals while our neighbors are left behind.”

• Hace años, (years ago)somepronounced “mexicanos” as mesh-shee-canos. In derision, Anglos called them chicanos. • Today many Mexican-Americans proudly call themselves “chicanos” or “La Raza” (the race). • For assimilated Mexican-Americans, “chicano” holds unpleasant connotations. • Gringos or Anglos: term for non-Hispanics

  7. MEXICAN- AMERICAN • Many U.S. citizens of Mexican descent, who are not farm workers. • For people whose families came from Mexico, but whose ancestors came from Spain in Europe, this term is problematic

  8. HISPANO • Preferred by many in our Southwest who identify with Spanish settlers, not Mexicans. • Millions who speak Spanish but are not of Spanish descent use the term Latino.

  9. LATINOS Latinos are people of Latin America (Mexico, Central & South America For native tribes, (Indians) “ Latino” is incorrect • “SPANISH PEOPLE” is used wrongly to mean any Spanish-speaking person; wrong! (like calling USA speakers of English “Englishmen.” • The real SPANISH people live in Spain in Europe
