Scene assessment • Upon arrival it is very important to give a accurate radio size up or assessment so the proper agencies can get started responding. • On the scene of a single large school bus, upright off the roadway full of adult passengers. Minor vehicle damage, no apparent patients have been thrown out of vehicle. Several walking wounded. On portable investigating.

  3. Scene safety • First you will want to keep the scene and everyone as safe as possible with what you have until a truck arrives. • If you can asses patients and move only the ones possible to a triage area so more critical patients will be accessible when EMS arrives.

  4. Truck Arrival • Crib the vehicle so that it is sturdy to all workers in and around the vehicle. • Take care to crib all areas of the bus. • Chalk wheels in all directions. • Chalk anywhere and everywhere to stabilize for the unknown rescue.

  5. Gaining Access • Using the tool of choice by your team, make access points for the cutters or saws alls and cut an entry way to get patients out. • Cut out all windows and control all window breaking. • Use any tools needed for the job.

  6. Exit door • At the same time if tools allow, have a second team cutting an exit so you can have a flow of emergency personnel and equipment in one door, attend to patient and exit the other door. • This makes for a working flow in and out of the bus. • Allows for easier work environment and less congestion in the bus.

  7. Bus on its side • This is a little trickier rescue to work. Not only do you have bodies and their baggage contents scattered everywhere, you also have the design of the bus to deal with. • These scenes are handled the same, safety, size up, access, patient care, removal, and transport.

  8. Cribbing • Crib the busses on the side much the same way you do other vehicles, anywhere and everywhere you can.

  9. Gaining access • Make the purchase points for the tools. Use the cutters and saws alls to cut entryways and exits for tools, equipment and personnel. • Make all entries big enough for patient removal.

  10. Removal of obstacles • Any removal of obstacles can and will help you get access to the patients. • Remove seats, personal contents, heater box or anything in the way to give you the room you need to rescue patients.
