  2. Hamlet’s Warning (to himself) • Look for imagery and connotative diction • What is Hamlet’s state of mind? How Shakespeare utilize hyperbole to show this? • What does he claim that his “soul” desires regarding his mother?

  3. R & G’s Report • How have Rosencrantz and Guildenstern’s loyalties shifted? How do you know? • What do they claim that their new goal is? • What does Polonius alert Claudius that he is going to do when Hamlet visits Gertrude in her closet?

  4. Dilemmas: Claudius and Hamlet • When Polonius leaves, Claudius delivers his only soliloquy (line 36-72) before kneeling down to pray. • Summarize what Claudius says. What is Claudius’ dilemma? • Hamlet approaches Claudius – who appears to be praying – and delivers a soliloquy (lines of his own. • Summarize what Hamlet says. What is Hamlet’s dilemma?

  5. Performing Claudius and Hamlet • Using your annotations and understanding of each soliloquy, perform this scene (page 100-101) with your partner • Try to insert the appropriate tone and inflection • Keep in mind that Claudius doesn’t know that Hamlet is there, and Hamlet doesn’t know the content of Claudius’ soliloquy
