Transactional • Starts with the idea that team members agree to obey their leader when the accept a job. • Organization “pays” team members in return for their effort and compliance. • Leader has the right to punish team members if their work does not meet an appropriate standard. • Strength • Roles and responsibilities are clarified • Transactional / Performance leads towards people who are ambitious and motivated by external rewards • Downside • Members do little to improve their job satisfaction which leads to high job turnover

  7. Buraucratic • Work “by the book” • They follow the rules rigorously to ensure their people follow procedures precisely • Strength • Works very well when there are safety risks • Works well with routine tasks like manufacturing • Weakness • Does not have a high level of flexibility, creativity or innovation • Bureaucratic leaders achieve their position because of their ability to and uphold rules, not because of their qualifications or expertise.

  8. Charismatic • Leaders inspire enthusiasm in their teams and are energetic and motivating. • Benefit • Excitement and commitment • Downside • Leaders believe more in themselves than their team • Leaders may believe they can do no wrong • Often feel a level of invincibility

  9. Task-Oriented • Focus on getting the job done and can be Autocratic • They actively define the work and the roles required, put structures in place, and plan, organize and monitor work • Benefit • Deadlines are met • Very useful for team members who don’t mange time well • Downfall • Motivation and Retention Problems

  10. People-Oriented • Leaders focus on organizing, supporting and developing the people on their teams. • Encourage good teamwork and creative collaboration • Benefit • Treat everyone on the team equally • Friendly and approachable • Pay attention to the welfare of everyone in the group • Team members are often more productive and willing to take risks • Downfall • This approach can be taken to far and put the development of their team over the tasks and project directives.

  11. Servant Leader • When someone at any level within the organization leads simply by meeting the needs of the team. • Often lead by example. • Benefits • Very Democratic • This is an approach that can help to create a positive corporate culture and can lead to high morale amoung team members • Downfalls • People who practice this style can find themselves left behind by their people • Can not be used when timing is a factor

  12. Transformation • Best used in business situations. • Leaders are inspiring because the expect the best from everyone on their team. • Leads to high levels of productivity. • Benefits • Supply a vision of the future that all can buy into • Downfalls • While leader’s enthusiasm is passed onto the team, he or she can need to be supported by detail people
