  3. Fire Drill Information • Wednesday, October 16 • 9:15 am the Fire Alarms will ring and students will find the closest exit to their current classroom. • Exit the building in an orderly fashion • Regroup on the field according to your advisory group.

  4. Fire Drill Information • Grade 10 students will find their advisors at the numbers on the red track area. • 1 is at the far end, 60 is near the pool. (40 is closer to the pool side)

  5. Fire Drill Information • If students do not report to their advisor, the whole fire drill will be difficult to carry on and we’ll lose break time. • When the drill is finished and all students are accounted for, students will go to morning break and then block 2 will begin at the regular time (9:55 am).

  6. PSAT Information • PSAT Exam for all grade 10 • Wednesday, October 16 • 10:00 am to 1:00 pm (After the Fire Drill) • A413 / 414 / 412 • Look for your location to be posted on the 3rd floor bulletin board behind the copy machine • Need to bring • Number 2 pencils • Calculator

PSAT Review and Preparation • The exam covers the following topics • Critical Reading • Sentence Completion • Passage-Based Reading • Math • Multiple Choice • Grid-Ins • Writing Skills • Identifying Sentence Errors • Improving Sentences • Improving Paragraphs • For more information, go to: http://www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/psat/prep.html

  8. Service Requirements • Each semester you need to have documentation of: • 5 hours of service inside the school • 5 hours of service outside of the school • To document this service, you will need photos, reflections, and a signature from the supervisor. • Upload photos, reflections, and supervisor’s reports to your E-portfolio by the end of each semester. • Supervisor / Reflection forms can be found at the secretary’s desk at any time. • Advisors will note a Pass / Fail for the semester Advisory Grade and write a comment on your progress in Service.

Service Opportunities Available • Inside of School Service • International Food Fair Help • Saturday, October 19 (11:00-3:00) • See Ms. Umberger’s bulletin board • Set Building and Stage Crew • Ongoing for Musical Performance • See Ms. Tatum-Kaiser for info • Lower School / Middle School Tutoring • See Paul Bonhomme for more information • Ongoing and personal choice for days

Service Opportunities Available • Outside of School Service Opportunities • River of Hearts Charity Sorting Drive • Saturday, Oct. 19 (9-11 am) @ YCIS • Local Primary School English Lessons • Tuesdays or Thursdays • 3:20-4:30 pm (Choose 1 day each week to go) • Minimum 3 times (1 hour each time) • See Ms. Wang (C004 to sign up) • Senior Citizen Performances • Tuesdays (3:45-4:45 pm) minimum 3 times • Perform music or dances for Senior Citizens

Register via website. • CAS Activities Second Quarter • Different days available • Check HS Café to sign up (see Ms. Davis)

  12. HS Service Program • 4 Steps • Step 1: Proposal: What are you going to do? How much time will you spend on this activity? Where will you go? Who will you be working with? • Step 2: Document: Ask the supervisor to write a brief comment on your participation in the service activity. (How did the student perform?) • Take Photos of your Service Activity • Upload photos to e-portfolio for documentation • Step 3: Reflection • See next page for specifics • Step 4: Post to E-Portfolio: • You need to upload photos and the document to your portfolio online. Advisors will ask you to share this information in December.

  13. HS Service Program • Step 3: Reflection • Consider some of the questions below as you think about what this activity meant to you. Which of these qualities would you consider relevant to the service activity you joined? What did you do during this service activity that reflects one or more of the qualities below? • Global and Community Appreciation • Solid Foundation of Knowledge • Effective Communication • Positive Learning Attitudes and Behaviors • High Level Thinking • Other questions to consider • What did you learn from this activity/experience? • What value does the activity have? • How you feel being involved? • How does this activity apply to your own life?

  14. E-Portfolio Updates • At https://studentsh.scis-his.net each student has a portfolio page. • You will use it to post schoolwork that demonstrates your learning this school year. • Go to your page and log in. • Log into the website with your Powerschool username and password.

  15. First Login & click on the appropriate year. (Grade 9 / 10) • Choose the subject for which you wish to add an artifact. • On the top of the screen, click on: New-->Post • Then write a reflection about why it demonstrates your learning. • What new skills have you learned? • Why is this a relevant example to put in your portfolio? • What does this say about your abilities? • Use the Add Media Button to add documents or files. • Tests, Papers, Images, Scanned documents, To Create a Portfolio Entry

  16. E-Portfolio Additions for today • Add Reflections for the following subjects today: • Service Activities thus far • If you haven’t done anything then post your proposals • Add in an artifact from one of your classes (Math, English, Social Studies, Science, Electives) and reflect on why it is significant • You must show these to your advisory teacher before leaving the classroom today!

  17. Tuesday Dragon Time (10.15) • Report directly to the Theater for a Grade 9/10 session on China and the Law as it applies to Expatriates • Please sit in the center section (grade 10 in front, grade 9 behind) • Please brainstorm some questions you might have in preparation for this session (e.g. What are the laws in China about internet usage?)
