Themes: Death- its presence in our lives Loss/grief- how people deal with it, how difficult it can be Loneliness- the pain of it & how it can be dealt with Healing- moving forward, not clinging to the past, accepting what has happened Comfort/sustenance-we gain strength from the things around us (kitchens, nature, people we care about Relationships- their complexity and variety; the importance of being connected to others Lightness/darkness, happiness/sadness, easy/difficult-exist simultaneously The necessity/inescapability of suffering- bringing depth & perspective to our lives Family takes many forms Conflicts (main) – connect to the theme ideas – people struggling with these things

Imagery: reflects themes in the novel Nature- reflects mood, situations, points to themes Plants & flowers- positive, life force Light & dark – positive & negative, clear & mysterious (including stars & moon) Symbols: Kitchen – “nourishment”, comfort (food, cooking, etc.) Moon- happiness, positive magical force
