What is the Church?

1 peter 1 22 2 10

1 Peter 1:22-2:10

  • Now that you have purified yourselves by obeying the truth so that you have sincere love for your brothers, love one another deeply, from the heart. For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God. For,    "All men are like grass,       and all their glory is like the flowers of the field;    the grass withers and the flowers fall,     but the word of the Lord stands forever.“

  • And this is the word that was preached to you.

  •  Therefore, rid yourselves of all malice and all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander of every kind. Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, now that you have tasted that the Lord is good.

1 peter 1 22 2 101

1 Peter 1:22-2:10

  •  As you come to him, the living Stone—rejected by men but chosen by God and precious to him— you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. For in Scripture it says:    "See, I lay a stone in Zion,       a chosen and precious cornerstone,    and the one who trusts in him       will never be put to shame.“ Now to you who believe, this stone is precious. But to those who do not believe,    "The stone the builders rejected       has become the capstone, and,    "A stone that causes men to stumble       and a rock that makes them fall.“

  • They stumble because they disobey the message—which is also what they were destined for. But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.

The holy christian church

The Holy Christian Church

  • The word “church” means those people “called out” by God.

  • The Holy Christian Church is all the people who have been called out of darkness into God’s wonderful light

  • The cornerstone of the church is Jesus. All who believe in him are living stones built on the cornerstone.

Romans 1 7

Romans 1:7

  • To all in Rome who are loved by God and called to be saints: Grace and peace to you from God our Father and from the Lord Jesus Christ.

1 corinthians 1 1 2

1 Corinthians 1:1-2

  • Paul, called to be an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and our brother Sosthenes, To the church of God in Corinth, to those sanctified in Christ Jesus and called to be holy, together with all those everywhere who call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ—their Lord and ours. . .

A christian congregation

A Christian congregation

  • A gathering or assembly of people around God’s word and sacraments

Matthew 13 47 50

Matthew 13:47-50

  • The kingdom of heaven is like a net that was let down into the lake and caught all kinds of fish. When it was full, the fishermen pulled it up on the shore. Then they sat down and collected the good fish in baskets, but threw the bad away. This is how it will be at the end of the age. The angels will come and separate the wicked from the righteous and throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

1 samuel 16 7

1 Samuel 16:7

  • The LORD does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.

Hebrews 10:23-25

  • Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.

To think about

To think about

What can a Christian church do for its community?

Some people say, “I don’t want to belong to a church because there are too many hypocrites there.” How might you respond?

Why do you suppose there are so many different church bodies in the world?
