  1. AQWF October 28 – 31: Chapters 6 - 7

  2. Tuesday, October 28 • Turn in IR Peer Review feedback, select a new IR book by Friday. • Finish partner quiz • Read independently through p. 128 (middle of Chapter 6) before class tomorrow. • Watch out for: graphic imagery, symbolism, foreshadowing, narrative pace, specific diction (benumbed, belaboured) • Annotation check Thursday (Chapters 4 – 6)

  3. Wednesday, October 29 “No soldier outlives a thousand chances. But every soldier believes in Chance and trusts his luck. “ (101) “ We are insensible, dead men, who through some trick, some dreadful magic, are still able to run and to kill.” (116) WNB#1: Method-Meaning Take Two Review p. 99 – 128 Homework: Finish Reading Chapter Six, sign up for IR book (link on webpage) by Friday.

  4. WNB#1: Method Meaning practice • Review WNB #6 from last quarter. You were instructed to find a sentence in Chapters 1 – 2 that appealed to you. Then, using the handouts provided, you were to categorize the sentence in regards to style (literary technique) and structure (syntax). After that, you were to write ONE SENTENCE explaining the effect of the technique/structure. The following slide is the example I presented in class.

  5. WNB #6 Example “Even his voice sounds like ashes.” p. 15 • Imagery, combining senses (synesthesia), NOT a simile This short sentence, coming at the end of a passage filled with a mirage of images ranging from the olfactory sensation of “roasting flesh” to the foreboding description of Kemmerich’s face as “ghastly yellow, and wan,” uses a visual description to describe an auditory sense in order to foreshadow the inevitable death of Baumer’s friend.

  6. WNB#6 revisited • Did you: • Write a complete sentence and include page number? • Identify the technique/structure used? • Write ONE SENTENCE explaining the effect of the technique/structure? • WNB#1 is your second try at this with a sentence from Chapter 6.

  7. WNB #1: Method-Meaning Take Two Select a sentence from Chapter 6 that contains stylistic or structural devices. Write the sentence and the page number. Then, in ONE SENTENCE, explain the effect of that technique/structure. I am providing both an example and a template. Do not use my example as your sentence.

  8. Example and Template “ We might be amongst themandmove in them; we might rememberandlovethemand be strirred by the sight of them.” (116) Polysyndeton, anaphora, parallel verbs, repetition The combination of parallel structure and repetition of both them and might in reference to the ideas of youth emphasizes the divide between the boys they once were and the soldiers they have become. The use of _______________ in reference to ____________ (active verb-explain effect)___________.

  9. Thursday, October 30 • Have the following on your desk : AHWHB, WNB, novel, paper • Method/Meaning Paragraph Practice (20 minutes) • Homework: • Sign Up for new IR book: Googleform on Webpage (scroll to Friday) • Begin reading Chapter 7: (annotation check for ch 4 – 6 tomorrow) • Pace, Juxtaposition, Irony, Theme, Humor (dark), Detail, Imagery, Diction • This chapter is a chapter at rest; Paul even gets to go home for a bit. Pay special attention to how uncomfortable he is when he is NOT a soldier now. Women( French women, Paul’s sister and mother, nurse) enter the picture and provide human comfort and nurturing.

  10. Friday, October 31: Happy Halloween!!! • Annotation Check (Quiz Grade) two at a time • Review yesterday’s paragraph and complete the following: • Underline action verbs • Circle transition verbs • Highlight EMBEDDED TEXT EVIDENCE in one color • Highlight SUPPORTING DETAIL in another color • Can’t find these things? Rewrite, recode (follow directions 1 – 4 again), and turn in by the end of class Homework: Finish reading and annotating Chapter 7 before class on Monday. Find a IR book that is rich in language. Sign up (on form) by Monday.
