History • 2004: Core planning group was created as the result of outreach in the community by an AmeriCorps VISTA. • proposed the idea of the Multicultural Center to provide educational services, non-profit services and outreach, community building, and personal and economic development. • 2005: officially opened July 9, 2005 at 1340 White Street • Since opening, MFC has developed a two-pronged approach to reaching out and addressing the needs that are currently challenging the community • 1st: offer programing to any person in the Dubuque community • 2nd: community education

History Con’t • The MFC has served 1,615 members of the Dubuque Community as of 2008 • In 2008 a partnership was formed between the City of Dubuque, Dubuque Community School District, and the MFC— the partnership resulted in the acquisition and remodeling of the MFC’s new location, 1157 Central Avenue • Sept. 15, 2009: The doors were opened at the new location

Functions of the Organization • Mission: Empowering all families and community members of Dubuque to reach their potential and build unity out of diversity • Vision: • built on a foundation of understanding and collaboration across racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic groups committed to producing engaged families and community members. • The Center serves as an inviting and safe place for community members, stimulates connections, and provides programs to foster civic engagement and social and economic success. • The Multicultural Family Center builds unity out of diversity.

  16. Issues of Time • External processes move slowly, because approval is needed by many people • Hierarchical structure • Internal processes move quickly and smoothly • Do a good job with planning ahead

  17. Issues of Space • No barriers between the volunteers, administration and clients • Currently designing proposal to combat the problem • Remodeling in order to create buffer • Innovation Process • Expanded to larger facility in 2009, but still seem to be operating with enough room
