  2. I. A Radical Form of Socialism A. In response to Capitalism, a new economic system called socialism gains popularity 1. Believed factors of production should be owned by the public and operate to benefit everyone 2. Goals: ending poverty, promoting equality & creating social justice B.1848: Karl Marx (German journalist) & Frederick Engels (son of factory owner) wrote a pamphlet called The Communist Manifesto 1. Manifesto calls for a more radical & complete form of socialism, called communism(econ. & political system) 2. Marx & Engels say capitalism has created division in society owned by

  3. b. workers known as the proletariat (“have-nots”) 4. Marx states proletariat will violently rise up against the bourgeoisie 3. Marx & Engels argue owners control “means of production” while the workers control nothing, which creates two warring classes: a. owners known as the bourgeoisie (“haves”) 5. Proletariat will have a worldwide revolution& when they control the means of production, the world will have equality (private prop. & gov’t no longer exists)
