  1. Chemistry Unit 2 Level 3 – Drawing Models

  2. Review – Level 1&2 • Name • Protons • Neutrons • Electrons • Ion • AAM • Isotope • Stable • Zinc • 30 • 36 • 27 • Yes • 65.39 • Yes • No

  3. Drawing and Diagrams • Ec = Electron Configuration (based on number of electrons) • L = Loop Diagram (based on number of subatomic particles) • C = Cross Diagram (Only for Elements under atomic number 12) • D = Dot Diagram (based on Periodic Table)

  4. Electron Configuration • The electron configuration is the placement of the electrons in shells and subshells or orbits around the nucleus. • Each shell contains a different number of electrons. The following Table may help

  5. Level 1 holds 2 electrons • 2 electrons in sublevel S • Level 2 holds 8 electrons • 2 in sublevel S • 6 in sublevel P • Level 3 18 electrons • 2 in sublevel S • 6 in sublevel P • 10 in sublevel D • Level 4: 32 electrons • 2 in sublevel S • 6 in sublevel P • 10 in sublevel D • 14 in sublevel F • Level 5: Matches 4 • Level 6: Matches 3 • Level 7: Matches 2 The following chart will be helpful.

  6. Electron Configuration Chart The order of the electrons is based on the following chart. 1s 2s 2p 3s 3p 3d 4s 4p 4d 4f 5s 5p 5d 5f 6s You will be getting a copy of this chart.

  7. To Do Ec • Find the number of electrons in Level 1 • Begin ‘placing’ electrons into shells and sublevels following the chart. • Record the number of electrons placed and where in the format “Shell sublevel number” • Example: 1s2 means there are 2 electrons on shell 1 in sublevel s.

  8. Loop Diagrams • A Loop Diagram is a short way of “drawing” a model of an atom. • It contains total numbers of protons and neutrons in the center (nucleus) and the total number of electrons in each shell on the loops.

  9. To Do ‘L’ • Place the number of protons and neutrons from Level 1 in the oval on the left (P#, N#) • Put the total number of electrons for each shell at the bottom of the corresponding loop. • Loops are numbered from the nucleus out to the right. P N # # # #

  10. Cross Diagram • Protons and Neutrons are located in the nucleus with Ps and Ns. • The Electrons are positioned in “shells” in orbit around the nucleus. • Each shell is filled (crossed) based on the Ec. xx xx ppp nnnn

  11. Dot Diagram • A dot diagram is a short way of writing the symbol with its number of valence electrons. • The valence electrons are associated with the group number.

  12. Valence Electrons • Group Number (column): • 1 • 2 • 13 • 14 • 15 • 16 • 17 • 18 • Valence Electrons • 1 • 2 • 3 • 4 • 5 • 6 • 7 • 8

  13. Example of Level 3 Loop Diagram 30 Protons 36 Neutrons 27 Electrons Electron Configuration 1s2,2s2,2p6,3s2,3p6,4s2,3d7 30P 36N Cross Diagram is not done for elements over 12. Dot Diagram 2 8 15 2 Can not be done with this element because it has no set number of valence electrons.
