  5. Aim of session To examine and to begin to understand how large scale, organisational change is attained

  6. Objectives of session • To interpret how change is influenced by political, economic, social and technological developments • To be able to apply knowledge of the change process to the development of controlled change within your local organisation

  7. Factors driving organisational change(P) • Political e.g. the move to Primary Care and the establishment of Health Action Zones (HAZ) and Health Improvement Programmes (HImP) prioritise the way in which healthcare will be delivered, ensuring that practice is altered to fit in with new directions of healthcare delivery. Although not strictly speaking Government agencies, statutory bodies, such as the Nursing and Midwifery Council, along with professional bodies, can drive change, too

  8. Factors driving organisational change(E) Economic change is effected by diminishing budgets and other resources, skill-mix reviews, the introduction of mandatory post- registration education and training etc

  9. Factors driving organisational change(S) • Social change is lead by, for example, the public's growing expectations and demands, as it becomes more informed and better educated e.g. The introduction of hotel services in hospitals • Newly recognised disease processes will, also, create their own need for change, impacting on fiscal, social and (potentially) technical domains. • The increasing focus on drug- and alcohol-related problems has a similar effect.

  10. Factors driving organisational change(T) Technological impacts on change are very marked e.g. increases in automation and computerisation have driven a need for better education, team and inter-professional approaches to healthcare

  11. Factors controlling the success of organisational change:- The vast amount of theory surrounding change is balanced by the way in which change is managed. In other words, knowing how to implement change is one thing; being able to put that knowledge into practice is another!

  12. Factors controlling the success of organisational change:- People may be the key. Are there sufficient knowledgeable, able, enthusiastic champions to drive the change process?

  13. Factors controlling the success of organisational change:- Is there sufficient funding to enable retraining, re-engineering of systems and practices?

  14. Factors controlling the success of organisational change:- Has sufficient information been given to the staff to let them understand why change is occurring?

  15. Factors controlling the success of organisational change:- Will there be a pilot run of the change to help iron out any problems?
