  2. A Family of Measures

  3. Many process changes to impact one outcome measure Excel version attached

  4. Planning the change Exercise: How will we know a change is an improvement? Give an example of each type of measure. The Aim: to decrease traffic accidents among hikers and bikers by 50% within 3 months How? We’ll post a sign:

  5. Outcome measure: # traffic accidents involving bikers and hikers Process measure: # hikers that moved to the side of the road PDSA measure: # km between signs; colour of sign Balancing measure: hmmm...# alligator bites reported

  6. A note on operational definitions Describe snow pants OR www.HQOntario.ca

  7. Key Messages • Connect your efforts to your Aim Statement . • When developing your measures and operational definitions, link them to the aim statement to make the impact apparent. This will help you decide what to measure. • Annotate your charts to understand how the measure contributes to achieving your aim. • There is a one-to-many relationship between the outcome measure and process measures. • A system level approach is required. • Common operational definitions allow all LHINs to “speak the same language” when discussing measures. • This allows us to methodically apply QI science to accelerate change/learning across sectors and across geographies. www.HQOntario.ca

  8. Key Messages • Translating concept to action • Context does matter. • Operational definitions allow us to be consistent in our interpretation. As we work through, there are refinements (inclusion, exclusion etc). • Sharing the measures is intended to “generate light, not heat” • Sensemaking is a critical function of QI science • Measurement for Improvement allows us to understand the impact of changes on the ultimate outcome (our aim) • It is essential to articulate operational definitions to ensure that we are all speaking the same language (think “snow pants”) www.HQOntario.ca

  9. What are we trying to Measure and does it make sense. Does it indicate that a change has occurred, either positive or negative. Does it relate to our aim statement Operational definitions www.HQOntario.ca

  10. To provide a continuum of care for clients with responsive behaviours within the community and LTCH by reducing preventable admissions to Emergency Departments by December 2012 Central LHIN BSOaim www.HQOntario.ca
