    5. Selection Vocabulary Vocabulary instruction is necessary because a student’s lack of word knowledge significantly impedes his or her reading growth. Vocabulary is the knowledge of words and their meanings. Vocabulary development focuses on words beyond basic sight words. It involves words that are rich in meaning (e.g., academic language, multiple-meaning words).

    6. Selection Vocabulary Tier 1: Commonly used words, these don’t necessarily have to be taught specifically. Examples: mom, table, book Tier 2: Words found in many sources and have wide applicability. Examples: compare, enormous, vital Tier 3: Content-specific words that do not appear in many sources. Examples: lava, bipartisan, Louisiana Purchase

    7. Selection Vocabulary Step 1: Introduce (I Tell) Step 2: Model (I Do) Step 3: Provide Guided Practice (We Do) Step 4: Provide Independent Practice (You Do)

    8. Vocabulary Routine Step: 1 (I Tell) Say: Today we will learn new vocabulary words. I will say a vocabulary word, define it, and use it in a sentence. Then, I will ask you to use the word in a sentence. The more we practice using the new words, the better readers are writers we will be.

    9. Vocabulary Routine Step: 2 (I Do) Say: I am going to say the vocabulary word so you can hear the correct pronunciation. Then I am going to define it, use it in a sentence, and ask you a question about it. Use the Syllable Scoop routine Use the Define/Example/Ask routine

    13. Vocabulary Routine Step: 2 (I Do) Define, Example, Ask Routine Define the word in simple, student friendly language. Provide an example of the word used in a meaningful sentence, relevant the student’s lives. Ask students a question that requires them to apply the word, either by giving an example or explanation or by identifying a synonym or antonym for the word.

    14. Vocabulary Routine Step: 3 (We Do) There are daily guided practice activities that are included in the Teacher’s Edition. There are different forms for which students can practice vocabulary: CLOZE sentences Picture sorts Sentence prompts

    15. Vocabulary Routine Step: 4 (You Do) When it appears that most students have a grasp of the introduced vocabulary words, calling on individual students about vocabulary words will help to informally assess whether or not they understood the words. This can be a simple check for understanding or a pencil and paper test.

    20. Vocabulary Strategy Vocabulary strategies are presented in conjunction with the selection vocabulary. The curriculum is organized in a way where selection vocabulary is introduced in conjunction with a story as well as a vocabulary strategy for understanding new words.

    21. Vocabulary Strategy Strategies are introduced and reviewed throughout the week. Each week there are two different vocabulary strategies. Monday - Strategy Tuesday - Words in Context Wednesday - Strategy Thursday - Words in Context Friday - Assess Strategy

    22. Extending Vocab in Context Make a copy of the vocabulary in context page. Have students highlight the vocabulary words. Talk to students about the words and what they mean (using context clues) Begin a summary in the beginning part of a flow map (will be the first paragraph) using the comprehension skill.
