  5. Health Care and Long-term Care Career Promotion Grants • GOAL: Developing intergenerational programs to encourage middle and high school students to work and volunteer in health care and long-term care settings

  6. Health Care and Long-term Care Career Promotion Grants • Detroit Lakes Public Schools received a $15,000 grant from the MDE and MDH • Detroit Lakes Public Schools received a $5,000 companion grant from West Central Initiative

  7. DL Grant Scope and Purpose • Develop a comprehensive health careers exploration program by creating a K-12 system of curricula, programs, and activities through increased collaboration and cooperation between local schools, MSCTC, and several area healthcare and long-term care providers

  8. Project Outcomes • Provide career awareness, career exploration, and career experience for students K-12 by expanding work-based learning opportunities. • Field trips • Classroom Speakers • Volunteerism • Job Shadowing • Internships

  9. Project Outcomes • Implement a Two-Day Workshop • Provide current labor market information and demographics • Provide tours of health care providers • Examine existing curriculum to identify weaknesses and strengths • Make appropriate curriculum connections to integrate new information

  10. Project Outcomes • Implement a Two-Day Workshop • Inform participants on key issues • Provide collaboration time for educators and area healthcare providers

  11. Project Outcomes • Implement a Two-Day Workshop that involves K-12 educators • 7 Elementary teachers • 3 Middle School teachers/counselors • 7 High School teachers/counselors

  12. Project Outcomes • Provide Curriculum Writing Follow-up Time • 6 hours per Elementary teacher • 6 hours per Middle School teacher • 10 hours per High School teacher/counselor

  13. Project Outcomes • Create Instructional Units • Elementary • Middle School • High School * Provide examples of how academic knowledge and skills are used in a variety of healthcare settings.

  17. Project Outcomes • Improve the following courses: • Health Careers • Health Experience • Nursing Assistant / Home Health Aide • Anatomy/Physiology and Medical Terminology

  18. Project Outcomes • Organize a HOSA Chapter at DLHS (Health Occupations Students of America) • Promote opportunities for students to earn “Certificates of Advanced Standing” with MSCTC • Promote industry-based Skill Certificates in Health Occupations to reflect entry-level skills

  19. Project Outcomes • Conduct a 1/2 day Career Festival for ALL 8th Grade Students
