BRFSS • Land line telephone survey • Random Digit Dialing • No Cell Phones • Adults interviewed; some child questions • Funded by CDC; Implemented locally • Family Health Administration, DHMH • Core modules asked regularly; others as CDC and states decide • PHQ-8 – Anxiety and Depression Module • Funds transferred from SAMSHA to CDC to states • Administered to about half of the total sample

PHQ-8 • Has a doctor ever told you that you had an anxiety disorder? • Has a doctor ever told you that you have a depressive disorder? • How many days have you felt bad about yourself or that you were a failure or had let yourself or your family down? • How many days have you felt down, depressed, or hopeless? • How many days have you felt tired or had little energy? • How many days have you had a poor appetite or eaten too much?

  4. PHQ-8 • How many days have you had little interest or pleasure doing things? • How many days have you had trouble concentrating on things such as reading the newspaper or watching TV? • How many days have you had trouble falling asleep or staying asleep or sleeping too much? • How many days have you moved or spoken so slowly that other people could have noticed? Or the opposite-fidgety or restless?

  5. Sample Sizes • 2006 - Total Respondents: 8,908 • PHQ 8 Respondents: 4,600 • Anxiety Diagnosis Respondents: 531 • Depression Diagnosis Respondents: 779 • 2007 – Total Respondents: 8,829 • PHQ 8 Respondents: 4,183 • Anxiety Diagnosis Respondents: 523 • Depression Diagnosis Respondents: 743
