  1. The E in TAFERR:Evaluation Tools for Ministry Improvement Don R. Simmons, Ph.D. www.creativepotentialconsulting.org

  2. Evaluate • Programs • Processes • Policies

  3. God evaluates PEOPLE Matthew 7:1-6

  4. Evaluation is ONE element in effectively equipping people in service. T.A.F.E.R.R.

  5. It fits in the CONTEXT of grace-filled relationships that are more focused on GROWING PEOPLE than GROWING PROGRAMS

  6. What Evaluation is NOT • Multiple Surveys • Reflection • Conversations after an event • Just for Leaders • Complicated • About the Food, Temperature, and Seating Comfort

  7. MASLOW’s Hierarchy

  8. What Evaluation is NOT • To be done and FILED/TOSSED/FORGOTTEN

  9. For Evaluation to be Useful it should be: • Fast • Timely • Objective • Future-focused

  10. Types of Evaluation for Unpaid Staff • Before and After Service Quick Surveys • Brief guided conversation Before/During/After Service • Blogs • Focus Groups • No more than 1 hour, no more than 10 open-ended questions • For Example: “HOW did you feel that the MINISTRY POSITION DESCRIPTION prepared you for your service as a Greeter?” • Follow up question: “Based on your response, what should be added/deleted from the Greeter Position Description?” • Phone Calls • Same Questions, Recorded and Documented • Online Surveys • Objective questions, measurable, USEFUL, communicative!

  11. STOP-START-CONTINUE

  12. Evaluation DO’s • Inform evaluators about the intended purpose, and WHO will receive the evaluations • Anonymity does NOT always support full-disclosure, but opens the possibility for criticism and attack • Anonymity does not allow for follow up on good ideas! • If evaluations are used, they should be an aspect of PLANNING and evaluators should KNOW that their evaluations mattered! • Timely evaluation reporting is a COURTESY • Beware of assigning a task to an evaluator due to a “great idea.” After a while, they will discontinue having “great ideas.” • A culture of TRUST and GRACE will breed honest, useful EVALUATION.
