Korea Busan Dongbaekseom Park

Dongbaek Island (or Dongbaekseom) is located on the extreme right end of the famous Haeundae Beach in Busan. It used to be an island but is now part of the mainland by sedimentation over time. Nonetheless, it still retains its original name of an island.

At Dongbaekseom Island, there are 2 walking trails, a scenic coastal trail (450m) on raised wooden deck along the coastline and a circular trail (930m) around the island's nature forest.The coast along Dongbaekseom Island is a Geosite of Busan National Geopark. Besides its beautiful scenery, it has the remains of volcanic activity from the Late Cretaceous Period and a precious geological heritage Dongbaekseom Island Coastal Trail will connect with Dongbaekseom Island Circular Trail near the lighthouse

  4. The Dongbaekseom park, like the island on which it is located, is named for the dongbaek (camellia) plants which grow here alongside pine trees. While it was once a true island, and surrounded by water, today it is attached to the mainland

  5. Dongbaekseom Island is known for its camellia flowers in bloom during Winter and Spring around December to March. The name of the island, 'Dongbaek' is the Korean for Camellia and 'seom' in Korean refers to 'island'

  7. The Gwangandaegyo or Diamond Bridge, a suspension bi-level bridge, connects Haeundae-gu to Suyeong-gu. The road surface is about 6,500 meters long, with the bridge as a whole spanning 7,420 meters. It is the second longest bridge in the country after the Incheon Bridge. The bridge opened for the 2002 Asian Games. It made international headlines in February 2019 when a Russian cargo ship crashed into the bridge. As a result, a five-metre wide hole was torn into the lower part of the bi-level bridge, but there were no injuries reported. The ship's captain was allegedly inebriated at the time of the crash, which may have contributed to the incident.

  20. Nurimaru APEC House is probably the most significant landmark and tourist attraction at Dongbaekseom Island. It is built for the 2005 APEC Summit where the head of states from 21 Asia-Pacific countries gathered. The architecture of Nurimaru is a great example of the combination of modern design and traditional Korean style. The design of the building resembles a traditional Korean pavilion called “Jeongja” and the ridgeline of Dongbaek Island is the inspiration for the shape of the roof.

  21. The name “Nurimaru APEC House” is the combination of the Korean words “Nuri,” meaning ‘world’ and “maru” meaning ‘summit’, while APEC stands for Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation

  30. The noted ninth-century scholar Choi Chi-won of the late Silla Dynasty is said to have been enchanted by the natural scenery here and inscribed the word “Haeundae” named after his pen-name, on this rock, thus giving the place its name
