  2. Bhutan, officially the Kingdom of Bhutan is a landlocked country in Asia. Located in the Eastern Himalayas, Bhutan is geopolitically in South Asia. Thimphu is its capital and largest city

  3. Great Buddha Dordenma is a gigantic Shakyamuni Buddha statue in the mountains of Bhutan celebrating the 60th anniversary of fourth king Jigme Singye Wangchuck

  4. Atop a hill in Thimphu, the capital and largest city of Bhutan, is a massive, golden Buddha sitting atop a gilded meditation hall. The huge 51m-tall statue of Buddha Dordenma commands the entry to the Thimphu valley

  5. The massive three-storey base houses a large chapel, while the body itself is filled with 125,000 smaller statues of Buddha

  6. Details of the throne of the Great Buddha Dordenma

  7. Detail of the throne of the Great Buddha Dordenma

  8. Garuda, detail of the throne of the Great Buddha Dordenma The Garuda is a large legendary bird, bird-like creature, or humanoid bird that appears in both Hindu and Buddhist  mythology

  9. The Garuda is a bird creature of Buddhist  mythology that combines the features of Gods and Animals

  11. Many esoteric faiths, especially Buddhism, attempt to wake us from this dream and remind us who we really are. They aim to show us the real context of all that is "out there" in the external world so that we can, once again, regain our true identity as the observer. The awakening from this dream is called "enlightenment."

  12. Symbolically a dorje (vajra) represents the 'thunderbolt of enlightenment‘, that abrupt change in human consciousness which is recognised by all the great religions as a pivotal episode in the lives of mystics and saints. Once "enlightened," the observer can detach from the personal importance of money, romance, food and even life itself. Happiness then comes from inside -- not outside -- of the observer who recognizes that he (or she) is part of the Creation

  13. Under the eyes of the Buddha statue, the Kuensel Phodrang nature park formally opened in 2011

  14. The park conserves 943.4 acres of forest area that surrounds the Buddha Dordenma statue and houses two public outdoor gymnasiums which opened in 2015

  15. Tara is a female Bodhisattva in Mahayana Buddhism who appears as a female Buddha in Vajrayana Buddhism. She is known as the "mother of liberation", and represents the virtues of success in work and achievements

  16. Tara is a meditation deity whose practice is used by practitioners of the Tibetan branch of Vajrayana Buddhism to develop certain inner qualities and understand outer, inner and secret teachings about compassion and emptiness

  17. Tara may more properly be understood as different aspects of the same quality, as bodhisattvas are often considered metaphors for Buddhist virtues.

  18. There is also recognition in some schools of Buddhism of twenty-one Tārās

  19. A practice text entitled In Praise of the 21 Tārās, is the most important text on Tārā in Tibetan Buddhism.

  20. The Buddha Dordenma statue holds an invisible secret: unbeknownst to many people viewing the statue, they aren’t actually looking at one Buddha, they’re looking at 125,000 of them. The statue houses over one hundred thousand smaller Buddha statues, each of which, like the Great Buddha Dordenma itself, will be made of bronze and  gilded in gold

  21. Inside Buddha Dordenma

  22. The interior is ringed with stunning gold columns

  23. Drums serve a very important place in both cultural and religious ceremonies

  24. Inside of Thimphu’s 169 foot Buddha Dordenma statue, there are 125,000 miniature Buddhas encapsulated inside of its enlightened bronze chest, ranging from 8 to 12 inches tall

  25. This means that in Thimphu, which has a population of around 100,000, there are more Buddhas than there are human beings
